The first corroborating report:
From ‘Amr ibn Ghaylan al-Thaqafi, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said—then he mentioned it in similar but more complete wording. It includes: “... lessen his wealth and children,” and: “... increase his wealth and children, and prolong his life.” It was narrated by Ibn Majah (4133), al-Tabarani (folio 58/1—al-Muntakhab), and al-Diya’ in al-Muwafaqat (folio 40/1), through several routes from Hisham ibn ‘Ammar: Sadaqah ibn Khalid narrated to us; Yazid ibn Abi Maryam narrated to us, from Abu ‘Ubayd Allah Muslim ibn Mishkam, from ‘Amr ibn Ghaylan al-Thaqafi.
I say: This is a chain of transmission whose narrators are all trustworthy, but it has two defects:
The first is that there is disagreement as to whether this Ibn Ghaylan was a Companion. For this reason, al-Zawa’id deemed it defective on account of its being mursal (having a missing link) (2/452).
The other is that, although Ibn ‘Ammar was one of al-Bukhari’s teachers, some criticism has been made of him. Al-Hafiz said: “Truthful; a Quran reciter. In old age, he became susceptible to prompting, so his earlier hadiths are more sound.” However, he was corroborated. It was narrated by al-Tarqufi in his Hadith (52/1) and Ibn ‘Asakir in al-Tarikh (2/295/13), through two other routes from Sadaqah, with the same report. (See Addendum no. 326/13.)
The other corroborating report is from Mu‘adh ibn Jabal, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said—then he mentioned it in wording like the hadith of Ibn Ghaylan. It was narrated by al-Tabarani (folio 77/1—al-Muntakhab) through two routes from ‘Amr ibn Waqid, from Yunus ibn Maysarah, from Abu Idris, from him.
I say: This is a very weak chain of transmission. This ‘Amr ibn Waqid is abandoned, as stated in al-Taqrib. (See Addendum no. 326/20.)
1339 — “When a person supplicates for another in his absence, the angel says to him: ‘And for you the like of it.’”
It was narrated by Ibn ‘Adi in al-Kamil (folio 180/1), through several routes from Luwayn: Hibban ibn ‘Ali al-‘Anazi informed us, from Suhayl ibn Abi Salih, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said this.
