“A man of shabby appearance came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he asked him: ‘Do you possess any wealth?’ He replied: ‘Yes, of every kind of wealth.’ He said: ‘Then let it be visible upon you, for Allah loves to see the good effect of it upon His servant, and He does not love misery or the pretence of misery.’”
I say: Its chain of transmission is authentic. Al-Haythami said in Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid (5/132): “Al-Tabarani also narrated it; he included a biographical notice for Zuhayr, and its narrators are trustworthy.”
I say: In his biographical notice, al-Bukhari cited in al-Tarikh al-Kabir (2/1/390) the following portion of it: “Allah loves to see the effect of it upon His servant.” This portion has many supporting reports, some of which I have cited in Takhrij al-Halal wa al-Haram (no. 75)—which has now been published, praise be to Allah Most High—and earlier in al-Sahihah (1290).
As for the phrase, “and He detests the beggar ...,” I have found no reliable supporting report for it except what appears in al-Jamiʿ al-Kabir (1/156/2): “Allah detests the importunate beggar.” Al-Daylami reported it from Abu Hurayrah, and al-Daylami from Ibn ʿAbbas. This is how it appears in its Zahiriyyah manuscript, but it is not without some issue, for such repetition is unusual in source citations. In al-Jamiʿ al-Saghir, he attributed it to Abu Nuʿaym in al-Hilyah, from Abu Hurayrah; yet it is not found in the index of al-Hilyah. Perhaps he meant his aforementioned work Akhbar Asbahan.
The hadith of Ibn ʿAbbas was transmitted by Abu Bakr al-Shirazi in Seven Sessions from al-Amali (fol. 12/2), from Abu Muhammad Musa ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Muqri al-Sanʿani, from Ibn Jurayj, from ʿAtaʾ, from Ibn ʿAbbas, attributed to the Prophet. However, al-Dhahabi said of this Musa: “He was not trustworthy.”
Then I found for it an acceptable supporting report with the wording: “Allah loves the forbearing, wealthy person who refrains from begging, and He detests the obscene, foul-mouthed, importunate beggar.”
