- “When you are reminded of Allah, desist.”
Al-Bazzar transmitted it in his Musnad (p. 312, al-Zawa’id), through Saʿd ibn Saʿid ibn Abi Saʿid al-Maqburi, from his brother, ʿAbd Allah ibn Saʿid—“I believe he attributed it to the Prophet,” he said—and then cited it.
I say: This chain of transmission is very weak, for ʿAbd Allah ibn Saʿid ibn Abi Saʿid al-Maqburi is very weak, and he narrated it as a mursal report. This is how I found it in al-Haythami’s Zawa’id al-Bazzar, separately compiled by al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar. It appears that the manuscripts of al-Bazzar differ concerning this hadith. For al-Haythami cited it in Majmaʿ al-Zawa’id (10/226) as follows: “From Saʿid ibn Abi Saʿid al-Maqburi, from Abu Hurayrah—I believe he attributed it to the Prophet—who said: ‘When ...’ Al-Bazzar narrated it, and its chain includes ʿAbd Allah ibn Saʿid ibn Abi Saʿid, who is weak.” Thus, he made it part of the Musnad of Abu Hurayrah and a narration of Saʿid al-Maqburi from him. (1)
Al-Suyuti also cited it in al-Jamiʿ al-Saghir, saying: “Al-Bazzar narrated it from Abu Saʿid al-Maqburi as a mursal report.” Thus, he made it a mursal narration of Abu Saʿid! Al-Manawi objected to this, on the basis of what al-Haythami stated: it is not mursal; rather, the narrator was uncertain whether to stop it at the Companion or attribute it to the Prophet, not whether it was mursal or otherwise. And Allah knows best.
However, the hadith has a corroborating report narrated by Yazid ibn Abi Habib, from Sinan ibn Saʿd al-Kindi, from Anas, from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: “When Allah is mentioned, desist.” Ibn ʿAdi transmitted it in al-Kamil (fol. 174/2).
I say: Its chain of transmission is good. All of its narrators are trustworthy except Sinan ibn Saʿd, who is also called Saʿd ibn Sinan. Al-Hafiz said: “He is truthful, though he has solitary reports.”
