al-Jawni was Abd al-Malik ibn Habib al-Azdi. Al-Hafiz graded it good (1/200), thus understating its rank, as though he had in mind the forthcoming route through Mu'ammal.
Ahmad also recorded it (4/402): Mu'ammal ibn Isma'il narrated to us; Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, through the same chain, adding at its end: “He said: ‘The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then remained silent.’” Mu'ammal ibn Isma'il is weak on account of his retention, but the hadith of Abu Hurayrah corroborates it with a lengthy account of a similar incident between him and Umar. Its conclusion reads: “Umar said: ‘Do not do so, for I fear that the people will rely upon it; rather, leave them to act.’ The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘Leave them.’”
Muslim recorded it (1/44) through the route of Ikrimah ibn Ammar, who said: Abu Kathir narrated to us; Abu Hurayrah narrated to me.
In another account, similar to the first, an incident took place between Jabir and Umar. Its conclusion reads: “He said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, the people have become presumptuous and fallen into evil.’ The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then said”—meaning, to Jabir—“Sit down.” Ibn Hibban recorded it (no. 7) with an authentic chain of transmission from the hadith of Jabir.
There is also the hadith of Mu'adh ibn Jabal, may Allah be pleased with him, which follows next. It contains: “I said: ‘Should I not give them glad tidings, O Messenger of Allah?’ He said: ‘Let them act.’” Al-Bukhari (1/199, Fath al-Bari), Muslim (1/45), and others recorded from the hadith of Anas that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had Mu'adh riding behind him on the saddle and said: “O Mu'adh ...” The hadith includes: “Should I not tell the people, so that they may rejoice?” He said: “Then they will rely upon it.” Mu'adh disclosed it at his death, fearing the sin of withholding it.
Ahmad recorded it (5/228, 229, 230, 232, and 236) through several routes from Mu'adh. In one of them, he said: “I shall tell you something that I heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Nothing prevented me from narrating it to you except the fear that you would rely upon it. I heard him say:”
