It also has supporting evidence in the hadith of Jabir, attributed to the Prophet, with the same wording. Abu Nu‘aym likewise recorded it through Ishaq: ‘Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from Abu al-Zubayr, who heard Jabir say—and he related it. He also recorded it by way of Ma‘qil, from Abu al-Zubayr, with similar wording, and said: “Muslim narrated it from Ishaq ibn Ibrahim and Muhammad ibn Rafi‘, from ‘Abd al-Razzaq.”
I say: Muslim narrated only the first clause, not the second.
Note: Al-Suyuti included the hadith in his two Jami‘ compilations with the wording: “When one of you performs ablution, let him put water into his nose and then expel it; and when he expels water from his nose, let him do so an odd number of times.” He said: “Abu Nu‘aym narrated it in al-Mustakhraj from Abu Hurayrah.” Yet I did not find it in the cited book except with the wording mentioned above; its first part is found in the two Sahih collections and elsewhere, as I have documented in the aforementioned source. And Allah knows best.
- “When any of you performs ablution and does it well, then goes out to the mosque, leaving solely for prayer, his left foot will continue to erase a sin and the other to record a good deed, until he enters the mosque.”
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir (3/198/1), and al-Hakim (1/217), by two routes from Kathir ibn Yazid, from Abu ‘Abd Allah al-Quraz, from Ibn ‘Umar, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said this. Al-Hakim said: “Kathir ibn Zayd and Abu ‘Abd Allah al-Quraz are Medinans; we know them only for truthfulness. This hadith is authentic.” Al-Dhahabi concurred with him.
I say: Rather, its chain of transmission is good. Abu ‘Abd Allah al-Quraz, whose name was Dinar, was trustworthy and among Muslim’s narrators. As for Kathir ibn Zayd, al-Hafiz said: “Truthful, though he makes mistakes.” Al-Dhahabi said: “Truthful, with some weakness.”
