1277 — “He would drink in three breaths. Whenever he brought the vessel to his mouth, he would mention the name of Allah, Most High, and whenever he set it down, he would praise Allah, Most High. He did this three times.”
It was recorded by al-Kharaʾiti in Fadilat al-Shukr (The Virtue of Gratitude) (fol. 129/2), and by al-Tabarani in al-Muʿjam al-Awsat (The Middle Dictionary) (fol. 108/1 of al-Mizzi’s selection from it), through two routes from ʿAtiq ibn Yaʿqub, who said: ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn Muhammad al-Darawardi narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn ʿAjlan, from his father—from Abu Hurayrah—that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said it. The first source does not include the words “from his father.” Al-Tabarani said: “ʿAtiq ibn Yaʿqub al-Zubayri alone narrated it.”
I say: Ibn Hibban and al-Daraqutni declared him trustworthy, and the narrators above him are known and trustworthy, apart from some slight criticism concerning Ibn ʿAjlan. Thus, the chain is good. Concerning the hadith, al-Haythami said (5/81): “Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Awsat, and it contains ʿAtiq ibn Yaʿqub, whom I do not know; the rest of its narrators are narrators of the Sahih.”
I say: His biography is found in al-Lisan, from which I have cited his accreditation. He also has a biography in al-Jarh wa al-Taʿdil (3/2/46). I have found a supporting narration with the wording: “Whenever he drank from a vessel, he would take three breaths, praising Allah, Mighty and Majestic, with every breath and giving Him thanks with the last of them.” It was narrated by Abu Bakr al-Shafiʿi in al-Fawaʾid (111/2), al-Tabarani (3/79/2), al-Mukhallis in al-Fawaʾid al-Muntaqah (6/67/1), al-ʿUqayli (421), Ibn al-Sunni (465), Abu al-Husayn ibn al-Naqqur in al-Qiraʾah ʿala al-Wazir al-Raʾis Abi al-Qasim (1/4/1–2), and likewise Abu Bakr al-Abhari in Juzʾ min al-Fawaʾid (3/1): ʿIsa—meaning Ibn Yunus—narrated to us, from al-Muʿalla ibn ʿIrfan, from Shaqiq ibn Salamah, from Ibn Masʿud, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
