“Two men boasted of their lineage during the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. One of them said: ‘I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so. Who are you—may you have no mother?!’ Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said...” He then cited the rest of it.
I say: This chain of transmission is authentic, and all its narrators are trustworthy and among the narrators of the two Shaykhs, apart from Yazid ibn Ziyad ibn Abi al-Ja'd, who is trustworthy. Jarir differed from him, narrating from Abd al-Malik ibn Umayr, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, from Mu'adh ibn Jabal, from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and cited it. Its narrators are likewise trustworthy, though al-Bayhaqi indicated that the first version is preferable. And Allah knows best.
1271 — “When a man marries a virgin, he remains with her for seven nights; and when he marries a previously married woman, he remains with her for three.”
It was narrated by al-Bayhaqi (7/302) and al-Khatib in al-Tarikh (10/406), through Abu Qilabah Abd al-Malik ibn Muhammad ibn Abd Allah al-Raqashi, who said: Abu Asim informed us, from Sufyan, from Ayyub and Khalid, from Abu Qilabah, from Anas, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it. Abu Awanah also narrated it in his Sahih, saying: Al-Saghani narrated to us from Abu Qilabah. He remarked: “It is singular, and I know of no one besides Abu Qilabah who narrated it.”
I say: He is truthful, but he makes mistakes; his memory changed after he settled in Baghdad, as stated in al-Taqrib. Yet he is not alone in narrating it, for Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated it from Ayyub, from Abu Qilabah, in a shorter form: “The virgin is entitled to seven, and the previously married woman to three.” It was narrated by al-Darimi (2/144), Ibn Majah (1916), and al-Daraqutni (409). Muhammad ibn Ishaq is trustworthy, but he practised tadlis and related it using an ambiguous “from” formula. However, it is supported by the hadith of Umm Salamah, attributed to the Prophet with the same wording. Muslim narrated it (4/173). Al-Hafiz discussed the report of al-Raqashi in al-Fath (9/276), and the substance of his discussion may be summarized
