and Ibn al-Jarud (190) and Ahmad (2/238), through Sufyan ibn Uyaynah, from al-Zuhri, from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, from Abu Hurayrah, who reported that the Messenger of Allah said this.
Baqiyyah corroborated him through al-Zubaydi, who said: Al-Zuhri informed me of it. Al-Nasai narrated it. It also appears in the two Sahih collections in similar wording. See my comments on it in my book Sahih al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib (1/205).
1264 — “The righteousness of Hajj is feeding others and gracious speech.”
Ibn Adi (20/2) and Abu al-Abbas al-Asamm in al-Fawa'id al-Muntaqah (3/1)—and al-Hakim (1/483) narrated it from him—reported: Ayyub, meaning Abu Suwayd al-Himyari, narrated to us; al-Awza'i narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Jabir, who attributed it to the Prophet. Al-Hakim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic, though the two of them did not include it because neither relied upon Ayyub ibn Suwayd. However, it has many supporting narrations.” Al-Dhahabi agreed with him.
Abu Hatim and others declared Ayyub ibn Suwayd weak. Al-Hafiz said: “Truthful, but prone to error.” Muhammad ibn Thabit corroborated him, reporting from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir with similar wording. Ahmad narrated it (3/325 and 334). Talhah ibn Amr also corroborated him, reporting from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir. Al-Tayalisi narrated it (1817), and al-Khara'iti narrated it from him in al-Makarim (25). Thus, the hadith is good in light of the two chains together.
I also found another chain for it from Jabir: Bishr ibn al-Walid narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Muslim al-Taifi narrated to us, from Amr ibn Dinar, from him. Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Awsat (1/113/2) and said: “No one narrated it from Amr except Muhammad ibn Muslim, and no one narrated it from him except Bishr.”
I say: Its narrators are trustworthy, except that Bishr ibn al-Walid had grown old and become senile, while Muhammad ibn Muslim al-Taifi was truthful but prone to error. Al-Mundhiri said in al-Targhib (2/107), and al-Haythami followed him in al-Majma (3/207): “Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Awsat, and its chain of transmission is good!”
