to it shortly before; however, its chain of transmission contains Shahr ibn Hawshab, who is weak. Moreover, it reads: “So long as he does not dye it or pluck it out,” stated with uncertainty. Perhaps the original wording of the hadith was only, “so long as he does not pluck it out,” after which the narrator became uncertain. Allah knows best.
1245 — “Let your beards grow, trim your moustaches, and differ from the People of the Book.”
Ahmad (5/264) and al-Bayhaqi in al-Shuʿab (2/259/2) recorded it through ʿAbd Allah ibn al-ʿAlaʾ ibn Zabr, who said: Al-Qasim, the freedman of Yazid, related to me from Abu Umamah, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came out to a group of the Ansar whose beards were white, and said: ‘O company of the Ansar, dye them red and yellow, and differ from the People of the Book.’ They said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, the People of the Book trim their beards and let their moustaches grow.’ So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said”—and he mentioned the hadith. They said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, the People of the Book wear leather socks and do not wear sandals.’ He said: ‘Wear sandals and leather socks, and differ from the People of the Book.’” The additional wording is Ahmad’s.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission. Al-Haythami said (5/131): “It was recorded by Ahmad and al-Tabarani. The narrators in Ahmad’s chain are those of the Sahih collections, apart from al-Qasim, who is trustworthy; there is some criticism concerning him, but it is not detrimental.”
“Your beards” is the plural of “beard.” “Your moustaches” is the plural of “moustache.”
1246 — “It is not lawful for a Muslim to shun another Muslim for more than three days. As long as they persist in their estrangement, they have both turned away from the truth. Whichever of them first returns to reconciliation, his being first to return is an expiation for him. If one of them offers greetings of peace and the other does not return his greeting, the angels return it to the former, while Satan returns it to the latter. If they die while remaining estranged, they will never be together in Paradise.”
Al-Bukhari recorded it in al-Adab al-Mufrad (no. 402), as did Ahmad (4/20) and al-Bayhaqi in al-Shuʿab (2/287/2), from Yazid al-Rishk, who said: I heard Muʿadhah al-ʿAdawiyyah say: I heard Hisham ibn ʿAmir say: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say it.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission.
