“That is how he stated it, but he is Abu al-ʿAjfaʾ al-Sulami, whose name was Hurm ibn Nusayb, a Syrian.”
I say: There is disagreement concerning him. Ibn Maʿin and Ibn Hibban declared him trustworthy, whereas al-Bukhari said: “His hadith is subject to scrutiny.” Al-Shaybani was Sari ibn Yahya, and he was trustworthy. Damrah was Ibn Rabiʿah, whose hadith is good; likewise al-Walid ibn Shujaʿ, who was one of Muslim’s narrators. Ibn Saʿd (7/395) also narrated it with an authentic chain from Qays ibn Abi Hazim as a mursal report. He also narrated it through Khalid ibn Samir, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Rabah al-Ansari, who said: Abu Qatadah al-Ansari related to us, attributing it to the Prophet, in a condensed version of the account, with the wording: “O Allah, he is one of Your swords, so grant victory through him.” He said: It was on that day that Khalid was named the Sword of Allah.
1238 — “He would let the lower garment hang down in front and raise it at the back.”
Ibn Saʿd (1/459) narrated it with an authentic chain from Yazid ibn Abi Habib as a report attributed to the Prophet. However, it is mursal. Ibn Saʿd and al-Bayhaqi connected its chain in al-Shuʿab (The Branches of Faith) (2/225/1), through Muhammad ibn Abi Yahya, the client of the Aslam tribe, from ʿIkrimah, the client of Ibn ʿAbbas, who said: I saw Ibn ʿAbbas, when he wore a waist-wrapper, let the front of it hang down until its two edges fell over the tops of his feet, while raising it at the back. I said to him: “Why do you wear it in this manner?” He replied: “I saw the Messenger of Allah wear his waist-wrapper in this manner.”
I say: This is an authentic chain. Ibn Saʿd then narrated, with an authentic chain from Muhammad ibn Abi Yahya, from a man, from Ibn ʿAbbas, who said: I saw the Messenger of Allah wear his waist-wrapper below his navel, with his navel visible; and I saw ʿUmar wear his waist-wrapper above his navel.
1239 — “He disliked anyone walking immediately behind him; rather, they should walk to his right and left.”
Al-Hakim (4/279) narrated it from Shayban, who said: Sulayman ibn al-Mughirah related to us; Thabit al-Bunani related to us; from Shuʿayb ibn Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr, may Allah be pleased
