Ahmad further narrated (5/311 and 4/383), through the route of ʿAbd Allah ibn Abi Talhah, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “When any of you eats, let him not eat with his left hand; when he drinks, let him not drink with his left hand; when he takes, let him not take with his left hand; and when he gives, let him not give with his left hand.”
I say: This is a good chain of transmission. Its narrators are trustworthy and are among Muslim’s narrators, but it is mursal, since ʿAbd Allah ibn Abi Talhah was born during the lifetime of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Ibn Saʿd deemed him trustworthy, as stated in al-Taqrib. For this reason, al-Hafiz said in Nataʾij al-Afkar (1/30/1): “Ahmad narrated it with a good chain from ʿAbd Allah ibn Abi Talhah.”
It is corroborated by the hadith of Ibn ʿUmar, attributed to the Prophet, with the same wording but without the phrase, “and when he takes ...” It adds: “For Satan eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand.” Muslim (6/109), Abu Dawud (2/314—al-Halabiyyah edition), al-Darimi (2/96), Malik (3/109—al-Halabiyyah edition), and Ahmad (2/8, 33, 80, 106, 128, and 135) narrated it through various routes from him. Muslim and Ahmad added in one narration: “He said: Nafiʿ would add to it: ‘And he should not take with it or give with it.’”
In one wording recorded by Muslim and Ahmad: “Let none of you eat with his left hand or drink ...” the hadith. It was also narrated by al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad (1189) and by al-Tirmidhi.
The hadith of Jabir, from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: “Do not eat with the left hand, for Satan eats with the left hand,” was narrated by Muslim (1/108–109), Ibn Majah (2/303), Ahmad (3/334 and 387), and Ibn ʿAsakir in Tarikh Dimashq (18/87/1).
1237 — “What an excellent servant of Allah Khalid is—a sword among the swords of Allah.”
Ibn ʿAsakir (5/272/2) narrated it from Muhammad ibn ʿIsa ibn Yazid al-Tarsusi
