“If one of you directly touches his genitals with his hand, with no barrier or covering between them, let him perform ablution.” Ibn Hibban (210) narrated it, and the wording is his; it was also narrated by al-Daraqutni (53) and al-Bayhaqi (1/133). Ibn Hibban’s chain of transmission is sound. Al-Bayhaqi also has another corroborating mursal report from Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Thawban.
1236 — “Let one of you eat with his right hand, drink with his right hand, take with his right hand, and give with his right hand, for Satan eats with his left hand, drinks with his left hand, gives with his left hand, and takes with his left hand.”
Ibn Majah (2/303) narrated it: Hisham ibn ʿAmmar reported to us; al-Haql ibn Ziyad reported to us; Hisham ibn Hassan reported to us, from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said it. Al-Busiri said in his Zawaʾid (197/1): “This is an authentic chain of transmission; its narrators are trustworthy.”
I say: All of them are trustworthy narrators of the two Sahih collections, apart from al-Haql ibn Ziyad, who is among Muslim’s narrators only; and Hisham is among al-Bukhari’s narrators alone, but he has some weakness. Al-Hafiz said in al-Taqrib: “He was truthful and a Quran reciter; when he grew old, he became susceptible to prompting.” However, the hadith is authentic, Allah willing, for its separate components have been narrated through other chains. Al-Nuʿman ibn Rashid al-Jazari narrated, from Ibn Shihab, from Ibn al-Musayyib, from Abu Hurayrah, in an abbreviated report attributed to the Prophet: “When one of you eats, let him eat with his right hand and drink with his right hand, for Satan eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand.” Ahmad (2/325/349) narrated it through two routes from him.
I say: It meets Muslim’s criteria, but this al-Nuʿman had a poor memory, as al-Hafiz stated.
