- As for the hadith of Ibn Masʿūd, it is narrated by Ibrāhīm ibn Ismāʿīl ibn Yaḥyā ibn Salamah ibn Kuhayl: “My father narrated to me from his father, from Salamah ibn Kuhayl, from Abū al-Zaʿrāʾ, from him.” Al-Tirmidhī (2/311) and al-Ḥākim (3/75) narrated it. Al-Ḥākim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic.” Al-Dhahabī rebutted him, saying: “Its chain is extremely weak.” This is further clarified by al-Tirmidhī’s statement immediately afterward: “We know it only through the hadith of Yaḥyā ibn Salamah ibn Kuhayl, and he is considered weak in hadith.”
I say: Rather, he is abandoned, as al-Ḥāfiẓ stated. His son Ismāʿīl is likewise, while his son Ibrāhīm is weak.
It has another route from Ibn Masʿūd, which Ibn ʿAsākir (9/323/1) narrated through Aḥmad ibn Rushd ibn Khuthaym: “Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān informed us, from al-Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ, from Firās ibn Yaḥyā, from al-Shaʿbī, from ʿAlqamah ibn Qays, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd,” with the same report but without its second part.
I say: Its narrators are trustworthy, and are among Muslim’s narrators, apart from this Aḥmad, whom I have not identified.
- As for the hadith of Ḥudhayfah, it is narrated by ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr—from a freedman of Ribʿī ibn Ḥirāsh—from Ribʿī ibn Ḥirāsh, from him, with similar wording. It was narrated by al-Tirmidhī (2/290), al-Ṭaḥāwī in al-Mushkil (2/83–84), Aḥmad (5/385 and 402), al-Ḥumaydī in his Musnad (1/214/249), Ibn Saʿd (2/334), Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim in al-Sunnah (1048 and 1049—with my verification), Abū Nuʿaym in al-Ḥilyah (9/109), al-Khaṭīb (12/20), al-Ḥākim (3/75), and Ibn ʿAsākir (9/323/1 and 12/31/1), through several routes from ʿAbd al-Malik. Some narrated it briefly and others at length; some mentioned the freedman, while others did not. Al-Ḥākim considered the latter stronger, contrary to Abū Ḥātim in al-ʿIlal (2/381). Its narrators, beginning with the freedman, are trustworthy. In one of his narrations, Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim named him Hilāl, whom al-Ḥāfiẓ regarded as acceptable. He was corroborated by ʿAmr ibn Hurm, from Ribʿī ibn Ḥirāsh, with the same report.
