—and Maʿdī was Abū Zumʿah, a Companion of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He said: I heard my father, Lāhiz ibn Qurayṭ ibn Maʿdī ibn Rifāʿah, narrate from his father, from Abū Rimthah, as a prophetic report, with the same wording. Ibn ʿAsākir narrated it (18/6/2).
This is an obscure chain of transmission; I could find no biographical notice for its narrators other than Abū Rimthah.
1228 — “Worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him.” He said: “O Prophet of Allah, give me more advice.” He said: “When you do wrong, then do good.” He said: “O Prophet of Allah, give me more advice.” He said: “Remain steadfast, and perfect your character.”
Ibn Ḥibbān (1922) and al-Ḥākim (4/244) narrated it through Ḥarmalah ibn ʿImrān al-Tujībī, who said that Abū al-Sumayṭ Saʿīd ibn Abī Saʿīd al-Mahrī narrated to him from his father, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr: “Muʿādh ibn Jabal intended to travel and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, advise me.’ He said”—and then mentioned it. Al-Ḥākim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic,” and al-Dhahabī concurred with him.
I say: Its narrators are trustworthy and are narrators of Muslim, apart from Saʿīd ibn Abī al-Sumayṭ. Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in al-Thiqāt, and Usāmah ibn Zayd also narrated from him. Thus, the hadith is good, Allah the Exalted willing.
Al-Haythamī said (8/23): “Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in al-Awsaṭ. Its chain contains ʿAbd Allah ibn Ṣāliḥ, whom some declared trustworthy while others declared weak; and Abū al-Sumayṭ Saʿīd ibn Abī, the client of al-Mahrī, I do not know.” Part of it is corroborated by a hadith of Muʿādh, which I have cited in the other book (2730).
1229 — “If one of you persists in an oath concerning his family, it is more sinful before Allah than the expiation He has commanded him to make.”
Abū Isḥāq al-Ḥarbī narrated it in Gharīb al-Ḥadīth (5/28/2): Muḥammad ibn Sahl narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us; Maʿmar informed us, from Hammām, who said: I heard Abū Hurayrah say—and he mentioned it as a prophetic report.
