1227 — “Husayn is from me, and I am from Husayn. May Allah love whoever loves Husayn. Husayn is a grandson among grandsons.”
It was narrated by al-Bukhārī in al-Tārīkh (4/2/415), al-Tirmidhī (3777), Ibn Mājah (144), Ibn Ḥibbān (2240), al-Ḥākim (3/177), and Aḥmad (4/172), through several routes from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUthmān ibn Khuthaym, from Saʿīd ibn Rāshid, from Yaʿlā ibn Murrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it.
Al-Tirmidhī said: “This hadith is good, and we know it only through the hadith of ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUthmān ibn Khuthaym.” Al-Ḥākim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic,” and al-Dhahabī concurred with him. This is open to question, however, because Saʿīd ibn Rāshid—also called Ibn Abī Rāshid—was narrated from only by this Ibn Khuthaym, and no one besides Ibn Ḥibbān declared him trustworthy. So how can his hadith be deemed authentic?! For this reason, al-Ḥāfiẓ said in al-Taqrīb: “Acceptable,” meaning when corroborated, as he explicitly states in its introduction.
Ibn Khuthaym is truthful and among Muslim’s narrators, as stated in al-Taqrīb, though there is some deficiency in his retention. For this reason, some of the imams declared him weak, as al-Dhahabī explained in al-Mīzān. He was, however, contradicted regarding his shaykh’s name: al-Bukhārī said in al-Adab al-Mufrad (364): “ʿAbd Allah ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us; Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us, from Rāshid ibn Saʿd, from Yaʿlā ibn Murrah,” with the same report. He likewise narrated it in al-Tārīkh, then cited after it the previously mentioned narration of Ibn Khuthaym and said: “The first is more authentic.”
I say: On this basis, the chain of transmission is good, since Rāshid ibn Saʿd is unanimously regarded as trustworthy, and those below him are narrators of the Ṣaḥīḥ. There has been criticism of ʿAbd Allah ibn Ṣāliḥ, but it does not harm the report here, Allah the Exalted willing. The hadith also has a corroborating report narrated by Jaʿfar ibn Lāhiz ibn Qurayṭ ibn Maʿdī ibn Rifāʿah
