peace and blessings be upon him. When he had finished his sermon, he said: “ʿUmar, rise and deliver a sermon.” So he rose and delivered a sermon shorter than that of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and of Abu Bakr. When he had finished his sermon, he said: “So-and-so, rise and deliver a sermon.” He then over-elaborated his speech, so the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him: “Be silent, or sit down, for such over-elaboration is from Satan. Indeed, some eloquence is sorcery.” Then he said: “Ibn Umm ʿAbd, rise and deliver a sermon.”
Ibn Umm ʿAbd rose, praised Allah, and extolled Him. Then he said: “People, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, is our Lord; Islam is our religion; the Quran is our guide; the Sacred House is our direction of prayer; and this is our Prophet,” gesturing with his hand towards the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. “We approve of what Allah Most High and His Messenger approve for us, and we disapprove of what Allah Most High and His Messenger disapprove for us.” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then said: “Ibn Umm ʿAbd has spoken rightly and truthfully. I approve ...” The rest of the hadith.
Al-Haythami said: “All its narrators are trustworthy, except that ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿUthman ibn Khuthaym did not hear from Abu al-Dardāʾ. And Allah knows best.”
1226 — “I saw Jaʿfar ibn Abī Ṭālib as an angel flying in Paradise with the angels, with two wings.”
An authentic hadith, transmitted through several routes from Abu Hurayrah, Ibn ʿUmar, Ibn ʿAbbās, ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, Abu ʿĀmir, and al-Barāʾ.
- Al-Tirmidhi (2/305), Abu Yaʿlā (4/1528–1529), al-Ḥākim (3/209), al-Mukhalliṣ in al-Fawāʾid al-Muntaqāh (9/12/1), Abu Ḥafṣ al-Kattānī in his Hadith collection (136/2), al-Khaṭīb in al-Muwaḍḍiḥ (2/103), and al-Ḍiyāʾ in Manāqib Jaʿfar (1/2) narrated it from ʿAbd Allah ibn Jaʿfar, from al-ʿAlāʾ, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah. Al-Ḥākim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic.” Al-Dhahabī objected, saying: “ʿAbd Allah ibn Jaʿfar, the father of ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī, is weak.”
I say: But it is corroborated by other narrations that follow:
- The narration of ʿĀmir al-Shaʿbī, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar: Whenever he greeted ʿAbd Allah ibn Jaʿfar, he would say: “Peace be upon you, O son of the one with the two wings.”
