And this is a good chain of transmission, provided that al-Dābarī preserved it accurately. Al-Suyūṭī also attributed it to al-Ḍiyāʾ. It has a third corroborating report from Ibn Masʿūd, attributed to the Prophet, with similar wording and the following addition: “When one of you is destined to die in a land, Allah creates for him a need that draws him to it. Then, when he reaches the furthest extent of his journey, He causes him to die, and on the Day of Resurrection the earth will say: ‘My Lord, this is what You entrusted to me.’”
1222 — “When one of you is destined to die in a land, Allah creates for him a need that draws him to it. Then, when he reaches the furthest extent of his journey, He causes him to die, and on the Day of Resurrection the earth will say: ‘My Lord, this is what You entrusted to me.’”
Ibn Mājah recorded it (2/566), as did Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim in al-Sunnah (346), al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (3/76/1), and al-Ḥākim (1/41–42), through several routes from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, from Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Al-Ḥākim said: “The two Shaykhs relied upon every one of the narrators of this hadith.” Al-Dhahabī agreed with him, and it is as they both said. Al-Būṣīrī said in al-Zawāʾid (folio 263/2): “This is an authentic chain of transmission; its narrators are trustworthy.”
1223 — “When you pray, do not spit in front of you or to your right. Rather, spit toward your left, if it is clear; otherwise, spit beneath your feet and rub it in.”
Al-Nasāʾī recorded it (1/119), as did al-Ḥākim (1/256), al-Bayhaqī (2/292), and Aḥmad (6/396), from Manṣūr, who said: I heard Ribʿī ibn Ḥirāsh narrate from Ṭāriq ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Al-Ḥākim said: “An authentic hadith.” Al-Dhahabī agreed with him, and it is as they both said.
Al-Suyūṭī cited the hadith from the narration of al-Bazzār with the wording: “When you wish to spit, do not spit to your right ...” to the end of the hadith. Al-Manāwī said: “Al-Haythamī said: ‘Its narrators are the narrators of the authentic collections.’ End quote. Thus, the author’s marking it as merely good is itself not good, for it should have been marked as authentic.”
