1215 — “Do not curse fever, for it removes the sins of the children of Adam just as the bellows remove the dross from iron.”
Muslim recorded it (8/16), as did al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad (516) and Ibn Sa‘d in al-Tabaqat (8/308), through the route of Abu al-Zubayr, who said: Jabir ibn ‘Abd Allah narrated to us that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, entered upon Umm al-Sa’ib, or Umm al-Musayyib, and said: “What is the matter with you, Umm al-Sa’ib—or Umm al-Musayyib—that you are shivering?” She replied: “It is fever; may Allah not bless it!” He then said…” and cited it.
Al-Hakim also recorded it (1/346) through this route with similar wording (see the Addendum, no. 216/4). It has a supporting narration related by Musa ibn ‘Ubaydah, from ‘Alqamah ibn Marthad, from Hafs ibn ‘Ubayd Allah, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: “Fever was mentioned in the presence of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and a man cursed it. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then said…” and cited it with similar wording. Ibn Majah recorded it (2/348). Musa ibn ‘Ubaydah is weak.
The hadith has two further supporting narrations, recorded by al-Tabarani in al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir: one from the hadith of ‘Abd Rabbih ibn Sa‘id, from his paternal aunt, attributed to the Prophet with similar wording; and another from the hadith of Fatimah al-Khuza‘iyyah, attributed to the Prophet. The chain of the first includes Muhammad ibn Abi Humayd, who is weak. The narrators in the other chain are narrators of the Sahih collections, as al-Haythami stated (2/307).
1216 — “A previously married woman has more right concerning herself than does her guardian, and a virgin’s consent is to be sought concerning herself; her consent is her silence.”
Malik (2/62), Muslim (2/62), Abu Dawud (1/327), al-Nasa’i (2/77–78), al-Tirmidhi (1/206), who graded it authentic, al-Darimi (2/138), Ibn Majah (1/576), al-Daraqutni (389), and Ahmad (1/242, 345, and 362) all recorded it from Malik, from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Fadl, from Nafi‘ ibn Jubayr ibn Mut‘im, from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abbas, attributed to the Prophet with this wording.
