1207 — “He prohibited us from drinking from a vessel with its mouth bent inward.”
Abū Yaʿlā recorded it in his Musnad (629), from Ṣāliḥ ibn Kaysān, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUtbah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: He then mentioned it as attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
I say: Its chain of transmission is authentic according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs. It also has a corroborating report from the hadith of Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, which has already passed under no. 1126.
1208 — “If you have committed a sin, then seek Allah’s forgiveness and repent to Him, for repentance from sin consists of remorse and seeking forgiveness.”
Al-Bayhaqī recorded it in al-Shuʿab (2/344/1): Ibrāhīm ibn Bashshār narrated to us; Sufyān narrated to us, from Wāʾil ibn Dāwūd, from his son Bakr, from al-Zuhrī, who said: Four men informed me: ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr, Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUtbah, and ʿAlqamah ibn Waqqāṣ, from ʿĀʾishah, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said—and he mentioned it. He said: “Ḥāmid ibn Yaḥyā narrated it from Sufyān, but he was uncertain about its chain of transmission.”
I say: Its narrators are trustworthy, apart from Ibrāhīm ibn Bashshār, who was a memorizer but made errors, as stated in al-Taqrīb. I therefore fear that he erred concerning Sufyān—who is Ibn ʿUyaynah—in its chain of transmission. Muḥammad ibn Yazīd al-Wāsiṭī differed from him, saying: From Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me: “O ʿĀʾishah, if …” and then mentioned the hadith.
This al-Wāsiṭī was trustworthy and highly precise, as stated in al-Taqrīb; thus, the hadith is authentic through this route. Al-Bukhārī (8/384), Muslim (8/116), and Aḥmad (6/196) also recorded it through several routes from al-Zuhrī, from the four men in Ibrāhīm ibn Bashshār’s chain of transmission, in the hadith of the slander incident, with the wording: “…and if you have committed a sin, then seek Allah’s forgiveness and repent to Him; for when a servant acknowledges his sin and then repents, Allah accepts his repentance…” This is also a narration recorded by al-Bayhaqī.
