Al-Dūlābī recorded it in al-Kunā (2/31), and Ibn ʿAsākir, through his route, in Tārīkh Dimashq (10/21/2–22/1): Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Walīd ibn Ḥammād ibn Jābir narrated to us, saying: Abū ʿUthmān ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Khālid narrated to me …
I say: This is an obscure chain of transmission. I do not know any of its narrators, nor have biographical notices been given for them, apart from Abū Rāshid, who is listed among the Companions.
In sum, among all these routes I have found none that can be judged good, let alone authentic. Some of its routes, however, are not severely weak, so the hadith may be strengthened through them—not through those among them whose weakness is severe—especially since al-Ḥākim and al-ʿIrāqī deemed some of them authentic.
9 — As for the hadith of Anas, Baqiyyah ibn al-Walīd narrates it, saying: Yaḥyā ibn Muslim informed us, from Abū al-Miqdām, from Mūsā ibn Anas, from his father, attributed to the Prophet: “When a visitor comes to you, honor him.”
Ibn Abī Ḥātim recorded it (2/242) and quoted his father as saying: “This is a rejected hadith.”
I say: This chain of transmission is very weak. This Abū al-Miqdām is Hishām ibn Ziyād, who is abandoned. Concerning Yaḥyā ibn Muslim, al-Dhahabī said: “A shaykh among Baqiyyah’s teachers, unknown and not to be relied upon.” He then cited another hadith of his concerning honoring a Muslim.
1206 — “When a man wishes to marry off his daughter, let him seek her permission.”
Abū Yaʿlā recorded it in his Musnad (1735): Bundār narrated to us; Salm ibn Qutaybah informed us; Yūnus informed us; he heard Abū Burdah, who heard Abū Mūsā, who heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say—and he mentioned it.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission; all of its narrators are among the narrators of the Ṣaḥīḥ collections. Yūnus is Ibn Abī Isḥāq, and Bundār is a nickname; his name was Muḥammad ibn Bashshār. Regarding the hadith, al-Majmaʿ (4/279) states: “It was narrated by Abū Yaʿlā and al-Ṭabarānī, and Abū Yaʿlā’s narrators are the narrators of the Ṣaḥīḥ collections.”
