4 — As for the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, it is narrated by Ibn Lahīʿah, from Ḥunayn ibn Abī Ḥakīm, from Ṣafwān ibn Sulaym, from Abū Salamah, from him. Ibn ʿAdī recorded it (folio 112/2). Ibn Lahīʿah had poor retention, while those above him in the chain are trustworthy.
I have found another route for it, recorded by al-Bazzār in his Musnad (p. 239—its supplementary material): Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥuṣayn narrated to us; Muzāḥim ibn al-ʿAwwām ibn Muzāḥim narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr narrated to us, from Abū Salamah, from him. He said: “We know of it from Abu Hurayrah only through this route; Muzāḥim was alone in narrating it.”
I say: I have found no biographical notice for him. Yet it has been narrated through another route, as mentioned above. Al-Haythamī said in al-Majmaʿ (8/16): “Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in al-Awsaṭ, as did al-Bazzār, and its chain includes persons whom I do not know.”
I found a third route for it, recorded by Ibn ʿAdī (343/2), through Muṭṭalib ibn Shuʿayb: Abū Ṣāliḥ narrated to us; al-Layth narrated to us, from Yūnus, from Ibn Shihāb, from Abū Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah. He mentioned it in Muṭṭalib’s biographical notice and said: “I have not seen any rejected hadith of his other than this; and with this chain, it is extremely rejected.”
5 — As for the hadith of Ibn ʿAbbās, it is narrated by Mālik ibn al-Ḥasan, from ʿUtbah, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās. Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (1/136/2). Its narrators are trustworthy, apart from Mālik ibn al-Ḥasan—given in the original as al-Ḥusayn—who is Mālik ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Mālik ibn al-Ḥuwayrith. Al-Haythamī said—see the addendum, 206/18—“He has weakness.”
ʿUtbah is Ibn Yaqẓān. Ibn Abī Ḥātim said (3/1/374): “I heard Ibn al-Junayd say: ‘He is worth nothing.’” Al-Haythamī also mentioned that al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in al-Awsaṭ. The apparent sense of his wording is that it came through a route other than this one, but he made no comment on it.
