1199 — “If one of you loves his brother for the sake of Allah, let him tell him so, for this is better for fostering closeness and more enduring in affection.”
Wakīʿ narrated it in al-Zuhd (2/67/2), with an authentic chain of transmission, from ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn in a report attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. I say: ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn was the son of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, a distinguished trustworthy narrator whose reports appear in both Ṣaḥīḥ collections; thus, it is a mursal report with an authentic chain of transmission. It also has a corroborating mursal report from Mujāhid, narrated by Ibn Abī al-Dunyā in Kitāb al-Ikhwān, as cited in al-Fatḥ al-Kabīr (1/67). It has another corroborating report from Yazīd ibn Nuʿāmah al-Ḍabbī, whose sources I documented in the other book (1726). Thus, in view of all its chains, the hadith is good, Allah Most High willing.
1200 — “Perform Hajj and ʿumrah in close succession, for they remove poverty and sins just as the bellows remove the dross from iron.”
It has been narrated on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, and Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh.
1 — As for the hadith of Ibn ʿAbbās, Sahl ibn Ḥammād Abū ʿAttāb al-Dallāl narrated it to us: ʿUzrah ibn Thābit informed us, from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, who said: Ibn ʿAbbās said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said—and he cited it.
Al-Nasāʾī recorded it (2/4), and al-Ṭabarānī transmitted it from him in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (3/113/1), as did al-Ḍiyāʾ al-Maqdisī in al-Aḥādīth al-Mukhtārah (67/99/2). I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission according to Muslim’s criteria. However, Ḥajjāj ibn Nuṣayr contradicted him, saying: Warqāʾ informed us, from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, from Ibn ʿUmar, with the same wording. Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it (3/210/1). But Ḥajjāj ibn Nuṣayr is weak, so his contradiction carries no weight. Nevertheless, it will also come through two other chains from Ibn ʿUmar. ʿAṭāʾ likewise corroborated it from Ibn ʿAbbās.
