al-Tawhid (21/2; see Addendum no. 194/22), from ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn Abi Salamah, who said: Wahb ibn Kaysan related to us from ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr al-Laythi, from Abu Hurayrah, in a report attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Ibn Mandah said: “This is an authentic chain of transmission with a continuous chain. It has also been narrated in the report of ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Asamm, from his uncle Yazid ibn al-Asamm, from Abu Hurayrah.” Ahmad (2/296) and Muslim (8/22) also recorded it through Yazid ibn Harun, who said: ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn Abi Salamah related it to us with this chain.
1198 — “When you come to the prayer, come to it with dignity and calmness. Pray what you catch of it, and complete what you have missed.”
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Awsat (1/23/1 and 2), through Muqaddam ibn Muhammad, who said: My uncle al-Qasim related to us from Hisham ibn Hassan, from Abu al-Sari, from Saʿd ibn Abi Waqqas, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said this. He added: “No one narrated it from Hisham except al-Qasim, and Muqaddam was alone in narrating it.”
I say: He is trustworthy and one of al-Bukhari’s shaykhs in his Sahih. Those above him in the chain are likewise among its narrators, apart from Abu al-Sari. Al-Dulabi mentioned him in al-Kuna (1/186), naming him Sulayman ibn Kundair, who saw Ibn ʿUmar.
I say: Sulayman ibn Kundair is trustworthy and is among the narrators covered in al-Tahdhib, but they give his kunyah as Abu Sadaqah and do not mention this kunyah, Abu al-Sari. Concerning the hadith, al-Majmaʿ (2/31) states: “Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Awsat through Abu al-Sari from Saʿd, but I have not found anyone who mentioned him. The rest of its narrators are attested as reliable.”
I say: Nevertheless, the hadith is authentic in any case. Al-Tabarani also narrated something similar from Anas through two chains from him, and narrated its latter half from Abu Qatadah in a report attributed to the Prophet. It is recorded in full in the two Sahihs and elsewhere, with the wording: “What you have missed, then complete it.” This makes clear that the meaning of “complete what you have missed” is: complete it. This is the correct interpretation. It is supported by Allah Most High’s saying: “When the prayer has been concluded ...” and similar verses. So take heed.
