1196 — “Whomever Allah intends good for, He grants him understanding of the religion. This wealth is sweet and verdant; whoever acquires it rightfully will be blessed in it. Beware of praising one another, for it is slaughter.”
Al-Tahawi recorded it in Mushkil al-Athar (2/279), as did Ahmad (4/92, 93, 98, and 99), from Saʿd ibn Ibrahim, from Maʿbad al-Juhani. He said: Muʿawiyah would rarely narrate anything from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, yet he would say these words and would rarely omit them when narrating them in gatherings from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. He then cited it.
This is a good chain of transmission. All its narrators are trustworthy and are among the narrators of the six canonical collections, apart from Maʿbad al-Juhani. Abu Hatim said: “He was the first to speak concerning divine decree, but he was truthful in hadith.” Al-Hafiz said something similar in al-Taqrib. Ibn Majah narrated the final phrase of it: “Beware of praising one another.” It will follow under number 1284.
1197 — “While a man was in a desert, he heard thunder within a cloud, and heard a voice in it saying: ‘Water the garden of so-and-so’—mentioning his name. That cloud came to a lava field and poured out the water it contained. Then it came to the lower end of a watercourse and reached his irrigation channel, which took in all the water. The man walked along with the cloud until he came to a man standing in his garden, watering it. He said, ‘O servant of Allah, what is your name?’ He replied, ‘Why do you ask?’ He said, ‘I heard a voice in the cloud that brought this water saying, “Water the garden of so-and-so,” mentioning your name. So what do you do with it when you harvest it?’ He replied, ‘Since you have said that, I divide it into three equal parts: one third for myself and my family, one third I put back into it, and one third I give to the poor, the beggars, and the wayfarer (1).’”
Al-Tayalisi narrated it in his Musnad (no. 2587), and Ibn Mandah, through his route, in
