It also has a supporting report from the hadith of Ibn ʿUmar, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: “The stream which Allah mentioned—‘Your Lord has made a stream beneath you’—is a river which Allah brought forth for you to drink from.”
Al-Ṭabarānī transmitted it in al-Kabīr (3/167/1) through Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbd Allāh: Ayyūb ibn Nuhayk informed us; I heard ʿIkrimah, the freedman of Ibn ʿAbbās, say: I heard Ibn ʿUmar …
This is a weak chain of transmission because of the weakness of Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbd Allāh, namely al-Bābaluttī. Worse than him is his teacher, Ayyūb ibn Nuhayk. Perhaps for this reason Ibn Kathīr confined himself to mentioning him in identifying the defect in this hadith; what preceded suffices in its place. And Allah knows best.
1192 — “This has distracted me from you all day: a glance at it and a glance at you.” Then he cast it away—meaning, the ring.
Al-Nasāʾī (2/295), Ibn Ḥibbān in his Ṣaḥīḥ (no. 1468, al-Mawārid), and Aḥmad (1/322) transmitted it through ʿUthmān ibn ʿUmar: Mālik ibn Mighwal informed us, from Sulaymān al-Shaybānī, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, “that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, acquired a ring and wore it, then said”—and he mentioned the foregoing.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission meeting the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim. It has a similar corroborating report from Ṭāwūs in mursal form, stating that the ring was made of gold. Ibn Saʿd transmitted it in al-Ṭabaqāt (1/2/161) with an authentic chain to him, were it not mursal. It is, however, supported by the hadith of Ibn ʿUmar: that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, acquired a gold ring, with its stone facing the palm of his hand, and had the words “Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah” engraved upon it. The people then made rings like it. When he saw that they had done so, he cast it away and said: “I shall never wear it again.” He then acquired a silver ring, and the people made silver rings. Al-Bukhārī and Muslim transmitted it in the Book of Dress.
