The hadith also has many corroborating reports, a number of which I have cited in al-Taʿlīqāt al-Jiyād. Among them are reports from Ibn ʿUmar recorded by al-Daraqutni (p. 221); from Ibn ʿAmr, recorded by him (220) and by al-Shahhami in Tuḥfat al-ʿĪd (folio 191/2); and by al-Tabarani in al-Awsaṭ (1/88/1): Muhammad ibn Musa narrated to us; Ismaʿil ibn Yahya narrated to us; al-Layth ibn Hammad narrated to us, from Ghawrak Abu ʿAbd Allah al-Jaʿfari, from Jaʿfar ibn Muhammad, from his father, from Jabir ibn ʿAbd Allah, attributed to the Prophet: “The charity of fast-breaking is due from every person: two mudd measures of flour or wheat; one saʿ of barley; and, among sweet foods, one saʿ of raisins or dates.” He said: “No one narrated it from Jaʿfar except Ghawrak, and no one narrated it from him except al-Layth ibn Hammad al-Istakhri.”
I say: This chain is very weak. Al-Daraqutni said: “Ghawrak is very weak, and those below him in the chain—al-Layth and others—are weak.”
I say: In his Sunan (225), al-Daraqutni also narrated it from Jabir, attributed to the Prophet, through an authentic chain, but without mentioning sweet foods.
In a narration recorded by Ahmad, Abu Dawud (1619), and al-Bayhaqi (4/163, 164, and 167), through Nuʿman ibn Rashid, from al-Zuhri, there is a similar report, with the addition: “Whether rich or poor: as for your rich person, Allah will purify him; and as for your poor person, Allah will return to him more than he gave.” It is also a narration of al-Daraqutni.
I say: Nuʿman ibn Rashid has some weakness. Al-Hafiz said: “Truthful, but poor in memory.” Al-Daraqutni then narrated (224), through Salam al-Tawil, from Zayd al-ʿAmi, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbas, a report attributed to the Prophet similar to the hadith under discussion, but with the addition: “a Jew or a Christian.” This is a rejected addition, uniquely narrated by al-Tawil. Al-Daraqutni said immediately afterward:
