Muhammad ibn Ishaq also narrated it in abbreviated form, from Humayd al-Tawil, from Anas. Ibn Majah recorded it (2/587).
A point of benefit: The hadith establishes the permissibility of swearing by one of Allah Most High’s attributes. One of al-Bayhaqi’s chapter headings in al-Sunan al-Kubra (10/41) is: “Chapter on what has been related concerning swearing by Allah Most High’s attributes, such as might, power, majesty, magnificence, greatness, speech, hearing, and the like.” He then cited several hadiths under it, referred to this hadith, and adduced some reports from Ibn Mas‘ud and others as evidence. He said: “It indicates that swearing by the Quran constituted an oath...” He then narrated, with an authentic chain of transmission, from the trustworthy Successor ‘Amr ibn Dinar, who said: “For seventy years, I encountered people saying: Allah is the Creator, and everything besides Him is created; and the Quran is the Speech of Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He.”
1168 — “He forbade the pecking of a crow, the sprawling of a beast of prey, and a man’s reserving a place in the mosque as a camel settles in its place.”
It was recorded by Abu Dawud (1/138), al-Nasa’i (1/167), al-Darimi (1/303), Ibn Majah (1/437), Ibn Khuzaymah (1/142/1), Ibn Hibban (476), al-Hakim (1/229), and Ahmad (3/428–444), all through the route of Ja‘far ibn ‘Abdullah ibn al-Hakam, from Tamim ibn Mahmud, from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Shibl, tracing it back to the Prophet, with this wording.
Al-Hakim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic,” and al-Dhahabi agreed with him. This is what they both said. Yet this Tamim ibn Mahmud was himself included by al-Dhahabi in al-Mizan, where he said: “Al-Bukhari said: ‘There is some question concerning him.’” Al-‘Uqayli, al-Dulabi, and Ibn al-Jarud also listed him among the weak narrators. As for Ibn Hibban, he declared him trustworthy, in keeping with his practice of declaring reliable those not well known for narrating hadith; for no one besides this Ja‘far is mentioned as having narrated from Tamim. Al-Dhahabi’s statement, “ ‘Uthman ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Tara’ifi narrated from him,” is a clear error.
