“O son of Adam, act as though you see Him, count yourself among the dead, and beware the supplication of the oppressed.” Ahmad recorded it (2/343).
I say: This chain is good for corroborative purposes, for the person from whom ‘Ali ibn Zayd heard it is an unknown Successor. Ibn Zayd—i.e., Ibn Jud‘an—had poor retention. It also has two further corroborating reports, which will appear under nos. 1474 and 1475. Thus, the addition is also authentic. All praise is due to Allah for granting success.
1158 — “Every wailing woman lies, except Umm Sa‘d.”
Ibn Sa‘d recorded it (3/427–428) from ‘Asim ibn ‘Umar ibn Qatadah, from Mahmud ibn Labid, who said:
“When the vein in Sa‘d’s arm was wounded at the Battle of the Trench and his condition became grave, they moved him to a woman called Rufaydah, who treated the wounded. Whenever the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, passed by him, he would ask, ‘How have you come to the evening?’ When morning came, he would ask, ‘How have you come to the morning?’ Sa‘d would inform him of his condition.
“Then, on the night when his people moved him, his condition became grave, so they carried him to the dwellings of Banu ‘Abd al-Ashhal. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came, as he had been asking about him, and they told him, ‘They have taken him away.’ So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, set out, and we went out with him. He hastened so greatly that the straps of our sandals broke and our cloaks fell from our necks. His Companions complained to him, saying, ‘O Messenger of Allah, you have exhausted us by walking so fast!’ He said, ‘I fear that the angels may reach him before us and wash him, as they washed Hanzalah.’
“The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, reached the house while Sa‘d was being washed. His mother was weeping over him and saying, ‘Alas for you, Sa‘d—how resolute and earnest you were!’ The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then mentioned the hadith.
“Then Sa‘d was carried out. The people—or such of them as Allah willed—said to the Messenger of Allah, ‘O Messenger of Allah, we have never carried a deceased person who was lighter upon us than Sa‘d.’ He said, ‘What should prevent him from being light upon you, when a great number of angels—he named a number that I did not retain—had descended? They had never descended before that day, and they carried him along with you.’
