Further supporting this is the fact that Aḥmad narrated another hadith from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Shibl through this chain in its correct form, by way of Hammām and ʿAffān, who said: Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr narrated to us from Zayd, from Abū Salām, from Abū Rāshid al-Ḥubrānī, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Shibl. And Allah knows best.
1148 — “The rider should greet the pedestrian, and if one person from a group offers the greeting, it suffices for all of them.”
Mālik recorded it (3/132) from Zayd ibn Aslam, who said that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said this. Zayd ibn Aslam was a trustworthy scholar and one of the narrators used by the six canonical collections. He would narrate mursal reports, and this is one of his mursal reports, in which he omits the Companion intermediary.
It has a corroborating report, but through a weak chain, from al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī, who said: “It was asked: ‘O Messenger of Allah, a group comes to a house and one of them asks permission to enter. Does that suffice for them all?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ It was asked: ‘Then one man from the group returns the greeting; does that suffice for them all?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ It was asked: ‘A group passes by and one of them offers the greeting; does that suffice for them all?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ It was asked: ‘Then one man from the group returns the greeting; does that suffice for them all?’ He said: ‘Yes.’” It is mentioned in al-Majmaʿ (8/35), where he said: “Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it, and its chain contains Kathīr ibn Yaḥyā, who is weak.” However, the hadith has another corroborating report from ʿAlī, documented in al-Irwāʾ (770).
1149 — “The younger person should greet the older, the passerby the one seated, and the smaller group the larger group.”
It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (7/127), Abū Dāwūd (2/342–343), al-Tirmidhī (2/118), who authenticated it, and Aḥmad (2/314), through Hammām ibn Munabbih, from Abū Hurayrah, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
Al-Bukhārī also recorded it in al-Adab al-Mufrad (145) through another route. He said: Aḥmad ibn Abī ʿAmr narrated to us; he said: My father narrated to me; he said: Ibrāhīm narrated to me from Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah, from Ṣafwān ibn Sulaym, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, from Abū Hurayrah, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with the same wording, except that he said: “And the pedestrian should greet the one seated.” This is an authentic chain; all its narrators are among al-Bukhārī’s narrators in his Ṣaḥīḥ. He also recorded it there (7/127–128) as a suspended narration from Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān, with this chain.
