(1935), through Ibn Jurayj, who said: Abū al-Zubayr informed us that he heard Jābir say it, relating it as attributed to the Companion. It is accorded the status of a report attributed to the Prophet, especially since it has also been narrated as such. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar said in Fatḥ al-Bārī (11/13): “Its chain is authentic.”
I say: Its narrators are all trustworthy and were used by Muslim. Both Ibn Jurayj and Abū al-Zubayr explicitly stated that they heard it, so we are safe from any concern of concealment in transmission on their part. As for the version attributed to the Prophet, al-Ḥāfiẓ said: “Abū ʿAwānah, Ibn Ḥibbān in his Ṣaḥīḥ, and al-Bazzār also narrated the complete hadith through another route from Ibn Jurayj, attributed to the Prophet.” His teacher, al-Haythamī, said in al-Majmaʿ (8/36): “Al-Bazzār narrated it, and its narrators are narrators of the Ṣaḥīḥ collections.”
1147 — “The rider should greet the pedestrian, the pedestrian the one seated, and the smaller group the larger group. Whoever returns the greeting receives its reward, while whoever does not return it receives nothing.”
It was recorded by al-Bukhārī in al-Adab al-Mufrad, p. (144), and by Aḥmad (3/444), from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, from Zayd ibn Salām, from his grandfather Abū Rāshid al-Ḥubrānī, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Shibl, who said: “I heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,” then he cited it. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said (11/13): “Its chain is authentic.”
I say: All its narrators are trustworthy and were used by Muslim, except Abū Rāshid al-Ḥubrānī, who is trustworthy, as stated in al-Taqrīb. Note that this is how the chain is presented by al-Bukhārī. As for Aḥmad, he did not mention this Abū Rāshid in it, so the chain thus reads: from Zayd ibn Salām, from his grandfather, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Shibl. This grandfather is Abū Salām Mamtūr, who was among Muslim’s narrators. Hence al-Haythamī said (8/36), after citing the hadith through his route: “Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it—and this is his wording—as did Aḥmad; the narrators of both are narrators of the Ṣaḥīḥ collections.”
I fear that a scribal omission occurred in both Aḥmad’s and al-Bukhārī’s chains: in al-Bukhārī’s chain, the transmission term ʿan (“from”) was omitted between “his grandfather” and Abū Rāshid; and in the Musnad, “Abū Rāshid” was omitted. That is, the correct chain is: from Zayd ibn Salām, from his grandfather, from Abū Rāshid, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. Two points support what I have maintained: first, they do not mention any direct narration by Zayd ibn Salām from Abū Rāshid; rather, it is through this Mamtūr. Second, they likewise do not state that Abū Rāshid was Zayd ibn Salām’s grandfather.
