Sufyan al-Thawri, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir ibn ʿAbd Allah, from ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab, attributed to the Prophet. Muslim also narrated it through Miʿqal—i.e., Ibn ʿUbayd Allah—from Abu al-Zubayr, with this same chain and wording. A number of others likewise narrated it from Abu al-Zubayr. It has previously been cited with the wording: “I shall surely expel the Jews” (924).
Al-Hakim regarded this hadith as one omitted by Muslim, but he was mistaken. His excuse is that Muslim, may Allah have mercy on him, did not set out its wording, but merely referred to the wording previously cited there. This is why al-Suyuti fell short by not attributing it to Muslim in his two works, al-Jamiʿ al-Kabir (2/119/1) and Dhayl al-Jamiʿ al-Saghir; in both of them, he attributed it only to al-Tirmidhi and al-Hakim. In al-Fath al-Kabir (2/7), it is attributed to Abu Dawud in place of al-Hakim. This is a scribal error, although the attribution itself is correct.
Note: Al-Suyuti cited it in the two aforementioned sources with the wording: “Expel the Jews and Christians from the Arabian Peninsula,” and attributed it to Muslim on the authority of ʿUmar. Yet I have not found it in Muslim with this wording at all; rather, it has the wording “the polytheists,” and is narrated from Ibn ʿAbbas, as mentioned in the preceding hadith.
1135 — “Go out and proclaim among the people: Whoever testifies that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah is assured of Paradise.”
Abu Yaʿla narrated it in his Musnad (p. 35, Islamic Office facsimile edition): Suwayd ibn Saʿid told us: Suwayd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz informed us, from Thabit ibn ʿAjlan, from Sulaym ibn ʿAmir, who said: I heard Abu Bakr say: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said—and he cited it. He said: “So I went out, and ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab met me and said, ‘What is the matter, Abu Bakr?’ I replied, ‘The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, told me: Go out …’—and he cited the rest of the hadith. ʿUmar said: ‘Return to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, for I fear that they may rely upon it.’ So I returned to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said: ‘What made you return?’ I informed him of what ʿUmar had said, and he replied: ‘He is right.’”
I say: This chain of transmission is weak. Suwayd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz is weak in hadith transmission, as stated in al-Taqrib. On this basis, al-Haythami deemed it defective in al-Majmaʿ (1/15), saying: “He is abandoned.”
