I then found that al-Tayalisi also narrated the hadith (no. 229), saying: “Qays narrated to us from Ibrahim ibn Maymun,” with the chain as in the narration of Yahya and Abu Ahmad, and the wording as in Wakiʿ’s narration. This reinforces what we deemed correct above. Praise be to Allah for His enabling grace.
Abu ʿUbayd cited the hadith in al-Amwal (no. 276), and al-Tahawi narrated it in al-Mushkil (4/12) through the first two chains and through two other chains, correctly, with the wording: “Expel the Jews from the Arabian Peninsula.” He said in al-Majmaʿ: “Al-Tabarani narrated it through two chains from Umm Salamah, and the narrators of one of them are narrators of the Sahih.”
I say: This is the wording of the previously cited hadith of Abu ʿUbaydah in al-Tayalisi, except that he said: “the Jews of the Hijaz.” It has many corroborating reports; see: “None shall remain,” “None shall be left,” “They shall not coexist,” “O ʿAli, if you assume authority,” and others, such as “I shall surely expel the Jews” (924). Among them is this hadith: “Expel the polytheists from the Arabian Peninsula, and grant delegations the same hospitality that I used to grant them.”
1133 — “Expel the polytheists from the Arabian Peninsula, and grant delegations the same hospitality that I used to grant them.”
Al-Bukhari (6/208), Muslim (5/75), Abu Dawud (2/43), al-Tahawi (4/16), al-Bayhaqi (9/207), and Ahmad (no. 1935) narrated it from Ibn ʿAbbas, who related that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, gave three instructions. He then cited the hadith and said: Ibn ʿAbbas said: “He remained silent concerning the third,” or he said: “I forgot it.”
I say: This indicates that it is permissible to apply the term “polytheist” to the People of the Book, for they are the ones intended by this hadith, as indicated by the preceding hadith and likewise by the following hadith: “If I live, I shall surely expel the Jews and Christians from the Arabian Peninsula, until I leave no one in it but a Muslim.”
1134 — “If I live, I shall surely expel the Jews and Christians from the Arabian Peninsula, until I leave no one in it but a Muslim.”
Muslim (5/160), Abu Dawud (2/43), al-Tirmidhi (2/398), al-Hakim (4/274), al-Bayhaqi (9/207), and Ahmad (1/32) narrated it through
