Abu Muhammad al-Mukhlidi likewise narrated it in al-Fawaʾid (2/285/1–2), and his version includes the additional wording.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission. All its narrators are trustworthy narrators of Muslim, apart from Waʾil ibn Dawud, who is trustworthy, as al-Hafiz stated. Qays also corroborated him, narrating it from Bakr ibn Waʾil. It was transmitted by Abu Yaʿla (1403), al-Bazzar (114—his supplementary section), and al-Tabarani in al-Awsat (1/1113). Al-Tabarani said: “No one narrated it from al-Zuhri except Bakr.”
I say: He is trustworthy, as you have learned; however, Qays—namely, Ibn al-Rabiʿ—is weak due to his memory. Al-Manawi regarded the hadith as defective on this basis, overlooking Waʾil ibn Dawud’s corroboration of him.
1131 — “Stand back from me, Umar! I was given a choice, and I chose; and I was told: ‘Seek forgiveness for them, or do not seek forgiveness for them. Even if you seek forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah will never forgive them.’ If I knew that he would be forgiven were I to exceed seventy times, I would do so.”
Al-Tirmidhi (2/185) and Ahmad (1/16) narrated it from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who said: Al-Zuhri narrated to me from ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUtbah, from Ibn ʿAbbas, who said: I heard Umar ibn al-Khattab say:
“When Abdullah ibn Ubayy died, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was called to pray over him. He went to him, and when he stood ready to pray, I moved around until I stood directly in front of him. I said, ‘Messenger of Allah, will you pray over the enemy of Allah, Abdullah ibn Ubayy, who said such-and-such on such-and-such a day?’—as I enumerated the occasions. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, smiled, until, when I persisted, he spoke the words quoted above. He then prayed over him, accompanied the funeral, and stood at his grave until the burial was completed.
“I was amazed at myself and at my audacity toward the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Yet Allah and His Messenger knew best. By Allah, only a short time passed before these two verses were revealed: ‘And do not ever pray over any of them who dies, nor stand at his grave. They disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger, and died while they were defiantly disobedient.’ Thereafter, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, did not pray over any hypocrite or stand at his grave, until Allah took him in death.”
