1126 — “He forbade bending back the mouths of waterskins to drink from them.”
It was narrated by al-Bukhari (10/73), Muslim (6/110), Abu Dawud (2/134), al-Tirmidhi (1/345), al-Darimi (2/119), al-Tahawi (2/360), Ibn Majah (2/336), al-Tayalisi (no. 2230), Ahmad (3/6, 67, 69, and 93), and Abu Ubayd in Gharib al-Hadith (fol. 112/1), through al-Zuhri, who heard Ubayd Allah ibn Abd Allah narrate from Abu سعيد al-Khudri, attributing it to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Al-Tirmidhi said: “A good, authentic hadith.”
Al-Hafiz said in Fath al-Bari: “It occurs in the Musnad of Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah, from Yazid ibn Harun, from Ibn Abi Dhib—I say: meaning, from al-Zuhri—at the beginning of this hadith: ‘A man drank from a waterskin, and a snake slipped into his belly; so the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade it.’ He then cited it. Al-Ismaʿili likewise narrated it through Abu Bakr and Uthman, the two sons of Abi Shaybah, relating from each of them separately, from Yazid, with it.”
I say: Al-Darimi and al-Musnad also relate it from Yazid with this chain, but without this addition. And Allah knows best.
The hadith also has a supporting report from Ibn Abbas with this wording, adding: “After the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had forbidden that, a man rose at night and bent back the mouth of a waterskin to drink from it, whereupon a snake came out of it upon him.” Ibn Majah and al-Hakim (4/140) narrated it through Abu Amir al-Ghifari: Zamʿah ibn Salih narrated to us from Salamah ibn Wahram, from Ikrimah, from Ibn Abbas. Al-Hakim said: “Authentic according to the conditions of al-Bukhari.” But this is not so, as al-Dhahabi indicated by saying, “So he said,” because neither Zamʿah nor Salamah is among al-Bukhari’s narrators. Moreover, the former is weak, while the latter has been criticized. Another narrator reported it from Ikrimah in a different wording, without this addition; see: “He forbade drinking from the mouth of the waterskin.”
1127 — “The three things I fear most for my community in the latter days are belief in the stars, denial of the divine decree, and the injustice of the ruler.”
Abu Amr al-Dani narrated it in al-Sunan al-Waridah fi al-Fitan (23/1–2), from Layth ibn Abi Sulaym, from Talhah ibn Musarrif, attributing it to the Prophet.
