And Sa'd, the client of Abu Bakrah, was listed by Ibn Abi Hatim (2/1/99), who said: “He narrated from Abu Bakrah!” Ibn Hibban said the same in al-Thiqat (1/107). Al-Bukhari, however, listed him correctly in al-Tarikh (2/2/55), saying: “He narrated from Ubayd Allah ibn Abi Bakrah.”
This hadith has a corroborating report from Abu Hurayrah with similar wording, which I have previously documented under no. 978. It has also been transmitted with another wording: “Whoever severs ties of kinship or swears a wicked oath will see its evil consequences before he dies.”
1121 — “Whoever severs ties of kinship or swears a wicked oath will see its evil consequences before he dies.”
Al-Bukhari cited it in suspended form in al-Tarikh (3/2/207), saying:
-
Hisham al-Dastuwa'i said: from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, from Umar, from a man of the Ansar, from al-Qasim ibn Abd al-Rahman, the client of Yazid ibn Mu'awiyah, from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace—then he cited it.
-
Sulayman ibn Bilal said: from Ibn Ulathah, from Hisham ibn Hassan, from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, from Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Rahman, from his father, from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, with similar wording.
-
Al-Nufayli said: from Abu al-Dahma, from Muhammad ibn Amr, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, with similar wording.
Al-Bayhaqi also recorded it (10/35) through Abu Hanifah, from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, from Mujahid and Ikrimah, from Abu Hurayrah, in a report attributed to the Prophet. He then mentioned the differing versions of its chain from Yahya and said: “The hadith is well known as a mursal report.” His remarks on this have already been quoted under hadith no. 978, which conveys the same meaning, so refer to it. Taken together, the hadith’s chains establish its authenticity.
1122 — “Guard your tongue. May your mother be bereaved of you, Mu'adh! What else throws people down upon their faces but their tongues?”
Al-Suyuti cited it thus in Dhayl al-Jami al-Saghir (folio 8/2), reporting it through al-Khara'iti in Makarim al-Akhlaq, from al-Hasan as a mursal report. In Musnad Ahmad (5/231), however, it is narrated through Abu Wa'il from Mu'adh ibn Jabal, who said:
