I say: That is, it stops at Ibn ʿUmar. Al-Bayhaqi recorded it through Ibn Wahb: “Sulayman ibn Bilal narrated to us from Zayd ibn Aslam, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar, who said: ‘Two dead animals have been made lawful for us…’” —the hadith.
He said: “This is an authentic chain of transmission, and it carries the import of a report with a continuous chain to the Prophet. Zayd’s sons, however, attributed it to the Prophet from their father.” He then cited it through the aforementioned route of Ibn Abi Uways and said: “All of Zayd’s sons are weak; Yahya ibn Maʿin criticized them. Ahmad ibn Hanbal and ʿAli ibn al-Madini considered ʿAbd Allah ibn Zayd reliable, but the first version is the sound one.” That is, the report attributed to the Companion; yet it has the ruling of a report attributed to the Prophet, as he mentioned earlier. Thus, the disagreement is merely formal. And Allah knows best.
1119 – “Swear by Allah, fulfill your oaths, and speak truthfully, for Allah dislikes that an oath be sworn by anyone other than Him.”
It was recorded by al-Sahmi in Tarikh Jurjan (288), al-Thaqafi in al-Thaqafiyyat (vol. 3, no. 15 of my copy), and Abu Nuʿaym in al-Hilyah (7/267), from ʿAffan ibn Sayyar, who said: Masʿar ibn Kidam narrated to us from Wabrah, from Ibn ʿUmar, attributed to the Prophet. Abu Nuʿaym said: “ʿAffan alone narrated it from Masʿar.”
I say: Its narrators have been declared reliable. The hadith also has another route from Ibn ʿUmar, with a good chain of transmission, which will appear later with the wording: “Do not swear by your fathers.” Thus, the hadith is authentic in view of its two routes together.
1120 – “There are two matters whose punishment is hastened in this world: transgression and undutifulness to parents.”
Al-Hakim recorded it (4/177) through Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz al-Rasibi, from Abu Bakr ibn ʿUbayd Allah, from Anas, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
He then mentioned it, adding at its beginning:
