“It is a good, singular, authentic hadith.” ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār also corroborated Abu Ṣāliḥ’s report from Abu Hurayrah with the wording: “The disbeliever’s molar will be like Uhud, his thigh like al-Bayḍāʾ, his seat in the Fire will span the distance between Qudayd and Mecca, and the thickness of his skin will be forty-two cubits by the cubit of the Almighty.” Ahmad (2/334 and 537), Ibn Abi ʿĀṣim in al-Sunnah (811), and Abu Bakr al-Anbārī in his Hadith collection (212/1) narrated it through ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Dīnār, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, from Abu Hurayrah, tracing it back to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.

I say: This is a good chain of transmission, and it meets al-Bukhārī’s criteria, except that ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Dīnār—the client of Ibn ʿUmar—has been criticized with respect to his retention. For this reason, al-Ḥāfiẓ said: “Truthful, but makes mistakes.”

Abu Ḥāzim also corroborated him from Abu Hurayrah with the wording: “The disbeliever’s molar—or canine tooth—will be like Uhud, and the thickness of his skin will be a three-day journey.” Muslim narrated it (8/154). It also has a supporting report narrated by ʿAbbād, from Ayyūb, from Abu Qilābah, from Abu ʿUthmān, from Thawbān, who said: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked about the disbeliever’s molar, and he replied: ‘It will be like Uhud, and the thickness of his skin will be forty cubits by the cubit of the Almighty.’” Al-Bazzār narrated it in his Musnad (p. 315). Its narrators are trustworthy apart from ʿAbbād—who is Ibn Manṣūr—for he is weak due to his poor retention and concealment in transmission, as was previously explained in detail at the beginning of the second volume. Thus, al-Ḥāfiẓ’s subsequent statement, “It is a good chain of transmission,” cannot be deemed sound, unless he meant that it is good by virtue of supporting evidence; that is possible.
