Silsilat al-Ahadith al-SahihahNasir al-Din al-Albani

He then reported it through an authentic chain from al-Hajjaj ibn al-Hajjaj, from Qatadah, from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amr, from Abu Hurayrah, attributed to the Prophet.

1087 — “Sleep is the brother of death, and the people of Paradise will not sleep.”

It has been narrated from Jabir and ‘Abd Allah ibn Abi Awfa.

  1. As for the hadith of Jabir, Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir narrated it from him, and there are two routes from him:

The first is through Sufyan al-Thawri, from him, with the same wording. The narrators differed concerning Sufyan: a group narrated it from him with a connected chain, while others narrated it from him as a mursal report. The narrators of the connected version are five:

The first: ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn al-Mughirah narrated to us from Sufyan, with the same wording. It was reported by Tammam al-Razi in al-Fawa’id (4/79/1), al-‘Uqayli in al-Du‘afa’ (p. 221), Ibn ‘Adi in al-Kamil (fol. 221/2), Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilyah (7/90) and Sifat al-Jannah (fol. 128/2), and likewise al-Diya’ al-Maqdisi in Sifat al-Jannah (3/84/1), through the route of al-Miqdam ibn Dawud, from him, with the same wording.

Al-‘Uqayli said: “This Ibn al-Mughirah contradicts others in some of his hadiths and narrates reports that have no basis. This is one of the reports in which he was contradicted.” He then cited it through a group of narrators from Sufyan as a mursal report, as will be explained.

I say: Al-Miqdam ibn Dawud is also weak—indeed, severely weak—but his shaykh is no better than he. Al-Dhahabi accused him of fabricating hadiths. Abu Nu‘aym said after the hadith, “Only ‘Abd Allah narrated it,” but he overlooked the following supporting transmissions.

The second: Al-Husayn ibn Hafs said: “Sufyan narrated to us,” with the same wording. It was reported by Abu al-Hasan al-Harbi in al-Harbiyyat (2/47/1–2), and Abu al-Shaykh in Tarikh Isfahan (pp. 157 and 192), through the route of al-Nadr ibn Hisham, who said: “Al-Husayn ibn Hafs narrated to us,” with the same wording. Abu al-Shaykh said: “No one narrated this hadith from al-Husayn ibn Hafs except al-Nadr.”
