then let him recite: “When the sun is wrapped up,” “When the sky is split open,” and “When the sky is cleft asunder.”
It was reported by al-Tirmidhi (2/235), Ibn Nasr in al-Qiyam (Standing; 58), al-Hakim (4/576), and ‘Abd al-Ghani al-Maqdisi in Dhikr al-Nar (Mention of the Fire; 222/1), through al-Tabarani by two routes from ‘Abd al-Razzaq; and by Ahmad—from him—in al-Musnad (2/27, 36, and 100). Likewise, Ibn Abi al-Dunya reported it in al-Ahwal (The Terrors; fol. 2/1), from him: ‘Abd Allah ibn Buhayr al-San‘ani narrated to us, saying: I heard ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid al-San‘ani say: I heard Ibn ‘Umar say”—then he cited it as a hadith attributed to the Prophet.
Al-Tirmidhi and al-Maqdisi then said: “This is a good, singular hadith.” Al-Hakim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic,” and al-Dhahabi agreed with him. It is as they said: its narrators are trustworthy. Ibn Hibban declared ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid trustworthy; a number of scholars narrated from him, and he was a man of merit.
1082 — “My Basin extends from Aden to Oman. Its water is whiter than snow and sweeter than honey. Those who will come to it most frequently are the poor Emigrants: dishevelled in hair and soiled in garments; they do not marry pampered women, nor are the doors of high rank opened to them. They fulfil the obligations due from them, but are not given what is due to them.”
Al-Tabarani reported it (1/147/1–2): Abu Zur‘ah al-Dimashqi narrated to us: Abu Mushir ‘Abd al-A‘la ibn Mushir narrated to us: Sadaqah ibn Khalid narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Waqid, from Abu Salam al-Aswad, from Thawban, as a hadith attributed to the Prophet.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission; all its narrators are well-known and trustworthy. He also has another route, which he reported (148/1), from Ishaq ibn Rashid, from al-Zuhri, from Sulayman ibn Yasar, from Thawban, with the same wording. All its narrators were used by al-Bukhari, except Hafs ibn ‘Umar ibn al-Sabah al-Raqqi, al-Tabarani’s shaykh. Ibn Hibban mentioned him in al-Thiqat (The Trustworthy Narrators) and said: “He sometimes erred.”
Ahmad, al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, and al-Hakim also reported the hadith through another route from Abu Salam al-Aswad, from Thawban, as a hadith attributed to the Prophet.
