The other is through Isma‘il ibn Yazid: Hisham ibn ‘Ubayd Allah narrated to us; Hakim ibn Nafi‘ narrated to us; ‘Ata’ al-Khurasani narrated to me from him. Abu Nu‘aym narrated it in Akhbar Isbahan (1/209), in the biography of this Isma‘il, whose grandfather’s name was Hurayth ibn Mardanabah al-Qattan. He said: “Toward the end of his life, he became confused concerning some of his hadith.” ‘Ata’ al-Khurasani was Ibn Abi Muslim, a truthful narrator who often erred, narrated mursal reports, and practised tadlis. Ishaq ibn Rahuyah also narrated it in his Musnad from Abu Hurayrah, as stated in al-Fath.
-
As for the hadith of Ibn Mas‘ud, it will be discussed in the following hadith.
-
As for the hadith of Mujahid, Ibn Wahb narrated it in al-Jami‘ (p. 76), from Ibn Zuhr, from Sulayman ibn Mihran, from him. He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said—and he then cited it, adding: “and betrayal.” Despite being mursal, it is weak because of Ibn Zuhr, whose name was ‘Ubayd Allah, for he is very weak.
-
As for the hadith of al-Hasan, Ibn al-Mubarak narrated it in al-Birr wa al-Silah, from ‘Awf, from him. He said: “It has reached me that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said”—and he then cited it. (1) Its chain is authentic, but it is also mursal. Yet, when the connected reports preceding it are joined to it, it gains strength thereby; and the sum of all this shows that the hadith has a basis, as al-Hafiz said—especially since some of its reports are good in themselves, such as the first and second hadiths, as is also the case with the forthcoming hadith of Ibn Mas‘ud. Thus, the hadith is unquestionably authentic. Al-Bukhari also cited it in suspended form in his Sahih, using a definitive wording.

“Whoever cheats us is not one of us, and scheming and deception are in the Fire.”
Ibn Hibban (1107), al-Tabarani in al-Mu‘jam al-Saghir (p. 153) and al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir (3/69/1), and Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilyah (4/188) narrated it through several routes from Abu Khalifah al-Fadl ibn al-Hubab: ‘Uthman ibn al-Haytham al-Mu’adhdhin narrated to us; my father narrated to us, from ‘Asim, from Zirr ibn Hubaysh, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Mas‘ud, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said—and he then cited it.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission, as I explained in al-Rawd al-Nadir (641) and Irwa’ al-Ghalil (1307).
