and you said to him what you said, then welcomed him warmly and treated him openly; whereas you said to so-and-so what you said, yet I did not see you treat him as you treated the other.” He replied: “O ʿĀʾishah, among the worst of people is the one from whose foul speech people must protect themselves.”
I say: Ibn Wahb recorded it in al-Jāmiʿ (69–70), as did Aḥmad (6/158) and al-Bukhārī in al-Adab al-Mufrad (338). Its chain meets Muslim’s conditions, were it not that Fulayḥ and his son both have some weakness.
1050 — “Faith and disbelief do not combine in a person’s heart; nor do falsehood and truthfulness combine together; nor do treachery and trustworthiness combine together.”
Ibn Wahb recorded it in al-Jāmiʿ (73 and 83): Ibn Lahīʿah informed me, from Abū al-Aswad, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rāfiʿ, from Abū Hurayrah, in a report traced back to the Prophet.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission; all its narrators are trustworthy.
1051 — “They—meaning fear and hope—do not come together in a servant’s heart at such a moment—meaning at the time of dying—except that Allah grants him what he hopes for and protects him from what he fears.”
Recorded by al-Tirmidhī (1/183–184), who graded it good; Ibn Mājah (4261); and Ibn Abī al-Dunyā in al-Muḥtaḍirīn (5/1–2) and Ḥusn al-Ẓann (186/1), through a chain from Sayyār ibn Ḥātim, who said: Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān informed us; Thābit al-Bunānī narrated to us from Anas ibn Mālik, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, entered upon a young man who was dying and asked, “How do you find yourself?” He replied, “I hope in Allah, O Messenger of Allah, yet I fear my sins.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then stated the above.
I say: This is a good chain, as al-Mundhirī said (4/141). Its narrators are trustworthy and are among Muslim’s narrators, apart from Sayyār ibn Ḥātim, who is truthful but prone to error, as stated in al-Taqrīb. He was corroborated by Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd al-Ḥimānī, from Ibn Baṭṭah in al-Ibānah (6/59/1), thereby rendering the hadith authentic. Praise be to Allah, by Whose grace righteous deeds are brought to completion.
It also has a supporting mursal report from ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr. However, it contains Abū Rabīʿah Zayd ibn ʿAwf, who is abandoned. Ibn Abī al-Dunyā recorded it in al-Maraḍ wa al-Kaffārāt (fol. 169/2).
