The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, entered and heard the sound of a boy crying, so he said the above. This is a good chain of transmission: all its narrators are trustworthy and were relied upon by al-Bukhārī and Muslim, apart from Abū Uways—ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Uways—of whom al-Taqrīb states: “Truthful, but prone to error.” Muslim recorded his narrations as supporting evidence. ʿĀʾishah also has another hadith concerning ruqyah, worded: “He used to instruct her to seek ruqyah.” It will come, Allah willing, under no. 2521.
1049 — “O ʿĀʾishah, among the worst of people is the one whom people leave—or bid farewell to—out of fear of his foul speech.”
Recorded by al-Bukhārī (4/125–126, 142), Muslim (8/21), Abū Dāwūd (4791), al-Tirmidhī (1/360), and Aḥmad (6/38), through Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, from Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir, from ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: “A man sought permission to enter upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, while I was with him. He said: ‘What an evil member—or brother—of his clan.’ Then he permitted him to enter and spoke gently to him. When the man left, I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, you said what you said about him, yet then you spoke gently to him!’ He said”—and then mentioned the above. The wording is al-Tirmidhī’s, and he said: “A good, authentic hadith.”
I say: The wording of the two Shaykhs and others is: “Indeed, the person of the worst standing before Allah on the Day of Resurrection ...”
It also has another route through Muḥammad ibn Fulayḥ, who said: My father narrated to us from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Maʿmar, from Abū Yūnus, the freedman of ʿĀʾishah, from her. She said: “A man sought permission to enter upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said: ‘What an evil member of his clan.’ When he entered, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, welcomed him warmly and treated him openly. Then he left, and another man sought permission to enter. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘What a good member of his clan.’ When he entered, he did not treat him as openly as he had treated the other, nor did he welcome him as warmly. When he left, I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, so-and-so sought permission ...’
