1047 — “Three things are sources of happiness, and three are sources of misery. Among the sources of happiness are: a wife who pleases you when you see her and whom, when you are away, you can trust with herself and your property; a mount that is gentle and thus enables you to catch up with your companions; and a house that is spacious and has many conveniences.
“Among the sources of misery are: a wife who displeases you when you see her, who is sharp-tongued toward you, and whom, when you are away, you cannot trust with herself or your property; a mount that is sluggish, so that if you strike it, it exhausts you, and if you leave it alone, it does not enable you to catch up with your companions; and a house that is cramped and has few conveniences.”
Al-Ḥākim (2/162) transmitted it through the route of Muḥammad ibn Bukayr al-Ḥaḍramī: Khālid ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; Abū Isḥāq al-Shaybānī narrated to us, from Abū Bakr ibn Ḥafṣ, from Muḥammad ibn Saʿd, from his father, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. He said: “Muḥammad ibn Bukayr alone narrated it; if he retained it accurately, then it is authentic according to the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim.”
Al-Dhahabī said: “Concerning Muḥammad, Abū Ḥātim said: ‘Truthful, but he makes mistakes’; and Yaʿqūb ibn Shaybah said: ‘Trustworthy.’”
Al-Mundhirī (3/68) said: “This Muḥammad is truthful, and more than one scholar deemed him trustworthy.”
I say: The exact wording of Abū Ḥātim in al-Jarḥ wa-al-Taʿdīl (3/2/214) is: “He is truthful in my view, though he sometimes makes mistakes.” He then cited a number of scholars who declared him trustworthy. Thus, a narrator like him does not bring a hadith below the rank of good. And Allah knows best.
It is corroborated, in abbreviated form, by Muḥammad ibn Abī Ḥumayd, from Ismāʿīl ibn Muḥammad, from his father, from his grandfather. Ibn ʿAsākir transmitted it in Tārīkh Dimashq (16/232/1).
1048 — “Why is this boy crying? Why have you not sought ruqyah (a protective healing recitation) for him against the evil eye?”
Aḥmad (6/72) transmitted it: Ḥusayn narrated to us; he said: Abū Uways narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Bakr narrated to us, from ʿAmrah, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
