—who was a Companion—said that the Messenger of Allah said this at the end of a hadith that begins: “Name yourselves after the Prophets ...” It is cited in al-Irwāʾ (1178). Thus, the hadith is established through this corroborating report, Allah willing. Ibn Wahb then said (p. 8):
“Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ informed me, from al-Ḥasan ibn Jābir, who said: The Messenger of Allah said: ‘You should use the name Yazīd, for there is no one who does not increase in good or evil; and al-Ḥārith, for there is no one who does not labour for his Hereafter or his worldly life; and Hammām, for there is no one who does not concern himself with his Hereafter or his worldly life. If you fail to choose these names, then choose names formed with ʿAbd (servant).’”
Al-Ḥasan ibn Jābir, who was al-Lakhmī, was a Successor; but no one besides this Muʿāwiyah and Muḥammad ibn al-Walīd al-Zubaydī narrated from him, and Ibn Ḥibbān alone declared him reliable. The hadith has already preceded under hadith 904; I have repeated it here only to strengthen it through the connected corroborating report and al-Lakhmī’s mursal report.
1041 — “You are my paternal uncle and the last remaining of my forefathers; a paternal uncle is a father.”
Al-Ṭabarānī transmitted it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (3/84/1–2): al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad al-Ḥannāṭ al-Rāmahurmuzī narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn Rushd ibn Khaytham al-Hilālī informed us; my uncle Saʿīd ibn Khaytham al-Hilālī informed us; Ḥanẓalah ibn Abū Sufyān informed us, from Ṭāwūs, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: Umm al-Faḍl bint al-Ḥārith narrated to me, saying:
“Once, as I was passing by while the Prophet was in the Ḥijr enclosure at the Kaʿbah, he said, ‘O Umm al-Faḍl!’ I replied, ‘At your service, Messenger of Allah.’ He said, ‘You are pregnant with a boy.’ She said, ‘How can that be, when Quraysh have made a pact that women are not to bear children?’ He said, ‘It is as I have told you. When you give birth, bring him to me.’
“When I gave birth, I brought him to the Prophet. He named him ʿAbd Allah and placed some of his saliva in the infant’s mouth. Then he said, ‘Take him away, and you will find him intelligent.’
“I went to al-ʿAbbās and informed him. He dressed himself and then came to the Prophet. He was a handsome, tall man. When the Messenger of Allah saw him, he rose to greet him, kissed him between the eyes, seated him on his right, and said, ‘This is my uncle; whoever wishes may boast of his uncle.’ Al-ʿAbbās said, ‘A little restraint in your words, Messenger of Allah.’ He replied, ‘Why should I not say it when you are my uncle ...’” The hadith continues.
I say: This chain contains weakness. Concerning Aḥmad ibn Rushd, Ibn Abū Ḥātim said (1/1/51):
