- “Do not go out to meet incoming goods, nor should any of you sell over another’s sale; and none of you—or no one—should propose to a woman already proposed to by his brother, until the first suitor withdraws or gives him permission to propose.”
Ahmad recorded it (2/153): ‘Abd al-Samad narrated to us; Sakhr narrated to us, from Nafi‘, from Ibn ‘Umar, who said: “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him, prohibited a town-dweller from selling on behalf of a desert-dweller, and he would say…” He then mentioned it.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission according to the conditions of al-Bukhari and Muslim. Both of them recorded it in similar wording, though separately. Sakhr was Ibn Juwayriyyah, the freedman of Banu Tamim; and ‘Abd al-Samad was Ibn ‘Abd al-Warith ibn Sa‘id al-‘Anbari, their freedman, from Basra.
- “When a woman goes out to the mosque, she should wash off her perfume just as she washes after sexual impurity.”
Al-Nasa’i recorded it (2/283) from Safwan ibn Sulaym, from a trustworthy man, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him, said—and then mentioned it.
I say: Its narrators are trustworthy apart from this man, who was not named, even though he was declared trustworthy. Such an appraisal of an unnamed narrator cannot be relied upon until he is named and identified, as has been established in Hadith Terminology.
Al-Bayhaqi recorded in al-Sunan al-Kubra (3/133), through the route of ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Harith ibn Abi ‘Ubayd—one of the shaykhs of Kuthi, the freedman of Abu Ruhm al-Ghifari—from his grandfather, who said: “I left the mosque with Abu Hurayrah one morning, and we met a woman wearing perfume the like of which I had never smelled before. Abu Hurayrah said to her, ‘Peace be upon you.’ She replied, ‘And upon you be peace.’ He asked, ‘Where are you going?’ She said, ‘To the mosque.’ He asked, ‘Why have you perfumed yourself with this perfume?’ She said, ‘For the mosque.’ He asked, ‘By Allah?’ She replied, ‘By Allah.’ He again asked, ‘By Allah?’ She replied, ‘By Allah.’ He said: ‘Indeed, my beloved Abu al-Qasim informed me that no prayer is accepted from a woman who perfumes herself for anyone other than her husband until she washes it off as she washes after sexual impurity. So go and wash it off, then return’
