Ibn Ḥibbān also said concerning him: “It is not permissible to cite him as evidence, because he contradicts the reliable narrators.”
I say: All the narrators above him in the chain are trustworthy. I found another chain for the hadith: al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in al-Kabīr, saying: Ibn Ḥanbal narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Abān al-Wāsiṭī informed us; Abū Shihāb informed us, from Abū Muḥammad al-Jazarī—who was Ḥamzah al-Nuṣaybī—from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, from Ibn ʿAbbās, attributed to the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, with its full wording. All its narrators are trustworthy except this Ḥamzah, namely Ḥamzah ibn Abī Ḥamzah al-Jazarī al-Nuṣaybī. In al-Taqrīb, it says of him: “Abandoned and accused of fabricating reports.”
I say: Al-Haythamī did not know him, for he said in al-Majmaʿ (5/212): “Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it, and it contains Abū Muḥammad al-Jazarī, Ḥamzah, whom I do not know; all its other narrators are among the narrators of the Ṣaḥīḥ collections!”
1021 — “Whoever assists in a dispute unjustly, or aids in wrongdoing, will remain under Allah’s wrath until he withdraws.”
Ibn Mājah recorded it (2/52) through Ḥusayn al-Muʿallim, from Maṭar al-Warrāq, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, attributed to the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him. This is a good chain of transmission: all its narrators are trustworthy and are among Muslim’s narrators. I did not grade it authentic only because Maṭar al-Warrāq has been criticized with regard to his retention. Al-Taqrīb says of him: “Truthful, but frequently mistaken.”
I say: He was not alone in narrating it. Al-Ḥākim also recorded it (4/99) through ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Muslim, from Nāfiʿ, with the same wording. He said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic,” and al-Dhahabī agreed with him.
I say: This judgment has an evident flaw, for al-Taqrīb says of ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Muslim: “Truthful, but makes many errors; he transmits mursal reports and practices concealed transmission.” Al-Muthannā ibn Zayd, who is unknown, also narrated it from Maṭar. Abū Dāwūd recorded it with similar wording.
