“Ḥanash al-Raḥabī is weak.”
I say: Ḥanash was his nickname; his name was al-Ḥusayn ibn Qays. In al-Taqrīb, it states that he was “abandoned.” However, he has two corroborating narrators reporting from ʿIkrimah.
The first is Ibrāhīm ibn Abī ʿAblah, who was trustworthy and whose narrations were recorded by both al-Bukhārī and Muslim. The other is Khusayf, who was truthful but had poor retention and became confused in his later years. Thus, the hadith is good by virtue of these corroborating reports.
The wording of Khusayf’s hadith is longer, as follows:
“Whoever aids falsehood in order to invalidate a truth by means of his falsehood has renounced the covenant of Allah and the covenant of His Messenger. Whoever sets out against Allah’s authority on earth in order to demean it, Allah will humiliate him on the Day of Resurrection—or, he said, until the Day of Resurrection—besides the disgrace He has stored up for him on the Day of Resurrection. Allah’s authority on earth is the Book of Allah and the sunnah of His Prophet. Whoever appoints a man while finding another who is better and more knowledgeable than him of the Book of Allah and the sunnah of His Prophet has betrayed Allah, His Messenger, and all the believers. Whoever is entrusted with any affair of the Muslims, Allah will not look to his own need until he looks to their needs and delivers their due rights to them. Whoever consumes one dirham of ribā bears the sin of thirty-six acts of fornication in Islam. And whoever’s flesh has grown from illicit gain, the Fire is more fitting for him.”
Al-Khaṭīb recorded it (6/76) through Ibrāhīm ibn Ziyād al-Qurashī, from Khusayf, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, in a report attributed to the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him.
This is a weak chain of transmission because of Khusayf’s weakness, as explained shortly before. As for Ibrāhīm ibn Ziyād al-Qurashī, al-Khaṭīb related that Ibn Maʿīn said of him: “I do not know him.” In al-Mīzān, it states: “Al-Bukhārī said: ‘Its chain of transmission is not sound.’ I say: Who is this person? He is unknown.”
I say: Part of the hadith has been corroborated. Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in al-Ṣaghīr (44) through Saʿīd ibn Raḥmah al-Miṣṣīṣī: Muḥammad ibn Ḥumayr narrated to us, from Ibrāhīm ibn Abī ʿAblah, from ʿIkrimah, in a report attributed to the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him. He confined it to the first clause, the last clause, and the one preceding it, except that he said: “the equivalent of thirty-three acts of fornication.” He also said: “Saʿīd ibn Raḥmah alone narrated it.”
