“It contains Ṣadaqah ibn ʿAbd Allah, whom Abu Hatim and others considered reliable, while Ahmad and a number of scholars deemed him weak; the rest of its narrators are narrators of the Ṣaḥīḥ collections.”
I say: This blanket statement is somewhat loose, for al-Ṭabarānī’s shaykh, Ahmad ibn Masʿūd, is not among the narrators of the Ṣaḥīḥ collections. Indeed, I have not identified him. Perhaps he is Ahmad ibn Masʿūd al-Wazzān, one of Ibn al-Muẓaffar’s shaykhs. Al-Khaṭīb included his biography (5/171), but mentioned neither any criticism nor accreditation concerning him.
I say: The hadith is an explicit text establishing the perpetual prohibition of temporary marriage. No one, then, should be misled by the legal opinions of certain leading scholars who permitted it in cases of necessity—let alone by those who permit it without qualification, like ordinary marriage, as is the position of the Shīʿah.
1011 — “He prohibited wearing the skins of predatory beasts and riding upon them.”
Abu Dawud (4131), al-Nasa’i (2/192), and al-Ṭaḥāwī in al-Mushkil (4/264) narrated it through ʿAmr ibn ʿUthmān, who said: Baqiyyah narrated to us, from Buḥayr, from Khālid—namely, Ibn Maʿdān—who said: “Al-Miqdām ibn Maʿdī Karib came to Muʿāwiyah and said to him, ‘I adjure you by Allah: do you know that the Messenger of Allah prohibited …?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’” This is al-Nasa’i’s wording. In Abu Dawud, it appears as a portion of a lengthy hadith.
Ahmad also narrated part of it (4/132) through Ḥaywah ibn Shurayḥ, who said: Baqiyyah narrated to us; Buḥayr ibn Saʿd narrated to us, with the same chain. He also narrated the passage cited above through this chain with the wording: “He prohibited silk, gold, and leopard-skin saddle pads.” Its chain is sound: all its narrators are reliable, and Baqiyyah explicitly stated that he heard it directly, thereby removing the suspicion of concealment in transmission. It also has a supporting narration from the hadith of Usāmah, the father of Abu al-Mulayḥ, attributed to the Prophet, with the wording: “He prohibited the skins of predatory beasts.” Abu Dawud, al-Nasa’i, al-Tirmidhī (1/328), al-Ṭaḥāwī, and al-Ḥākim
