—then they would be in these three. Since they are not found in these three, they are not found in anything.”
- “Traders will be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection as wicked sinners, except those who fear Allah, act righteously, and speak truthfully.”
It was narrated by al-Tirmidhi (1/228), al-Darimi (2/247), Ibn Majah (2/5), Ibn Hibban (1095), and al-Hakim (2/6), through the route of ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Uthman ibn Khuthaym, from Isma‘il ibn ‘Ubayd ibn Rifa‘ah, from his father, from his grandfather, who said:
“He went out with the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to the prayer ground and saw people buying and selling. He said, ‘O company of traders!’ They responded to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, raising their heads and looking toward him. He then said”—and he quoted the hadith.
Al-Tirmidhi said: “A good, authentic hadith.” Al-Hakim said: “Authentic in chain of transmission,” and al-Dhahabi concurred with him, although he said in Isma‘il’s biography: “I know of no one besides ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Uthman ibn Khuthaym who narrated from him; nevertheless, al-Tirmidhi declared this hadith authentic.” In al-Taqrib, he is described as acceptable.
The hadith has a supporting narration that raises it to the rank of good, Allah willing. Its wording is: “Traders are wicked sinners.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, has Allah not made trade lawful?” He said, “Yes, but they take oaths and thereby sin, and they speak and lie.”
