“Its chain of transmission is authentic,” and al-Dhahabi agreed with him.
It is as they both said; indeed, it meets Muslim’s criteria. Regarding this Abu Hassan, al-Zarkashi said in al-Ijabah (p. 128): “His name is Muslim al-Ajrad, and he narrates from Ibn ‘Abbas and ‘A’ishah.”
I say: He is trustworthy and one of Muslim’s narrators. Ibn Khuzaymah also narrated it, as mentioned in al-Fath (6/46).
It is further corroborated by what al-Tayalisi recorded in his Musnad (1537): Muhammad ibn Rashid narrated to us from Makhul that ‘A’ishah was told: “Abu Hurayrah says that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: ‘Ill omen is found in three things: the house, the woman, and the horse.’” ‘A’ishah replied: “Abu Hurayrah did not retain it accurately, for he entered while the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was saying: ‘May Allah curse the Jews; they say: Ill omen is found in the house, the woman, and the horse.’ He heard the end of the hadith but did not hear its beginning.”
Its chain is good, were it not for the break between Makhul and ‘A’ishah. Nevertheless, there is no objection to using it for corroboration and supporting evidence, provided that the omitted narrator between them was a third person other than the two previously mentioned men of Banu ‘Amir.
Moreover, it may be that the error which Lady ‘A’ishah denounced was made by the narrator from Abu Hurayrah, rather than by Abu Hurayrah himself. Ahmad (2/289) narrated through Abu Ma‘shar, from Muhammad ibn Qays, who said: “Abu Hurayrah was asked: ‘Did you hear from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace): “Superstitious omens are found in three things: the dwelling, the horse, and the woman”?’ He replied: ‘I would then be attributing to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) what he did not say. Rather, I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) say: “The most reliable omen is the favorable omen, and the evil eye is real.”’” Abu Ma‘shar is weak.
